Collaboration with Chiba University, Department of Landscape Architecture IPB University Holds Summer Course of Indonesia Tropical Landscape

The 2nd Summer Course of Indonesia Tropical Landscape with the theme “Sustainable and Resilient Urban Landscape” was successfully held recently by the Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University, in collaboration with the Graduate School of Horticulture, Chiba University Japan.

The 2nd Summer Course 2024 of Indonesia Tropical Landscape was attended by six students of Chiba University and six students of University of The Philippines Diliman. The programme lasted for 9 days consisting of a studium generale at IPB University Campus and excursions to five locations, which were Bogor Botanical Garden, Kampoeng Wisata Cinangneng, Cibodas Botanical Garden, Tebet Eco Park, and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.

“This year’s Summer Course not only introduces the beauty of tropical landscapes and Indonesia’s cultural diversity through studium generale and excursions in the field, but also provides opportunities for participants to attend lectures at IPB University and discuss with the Landscape Architecture Student Association,” explained Chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture at IPB University, Dr Akhmad Arifin Hadi.

He hopes that through excursions to the field, participants can know and understand sustainable and resilient urban landscapes both in theory and practice. “The implementation of this Summer Course is a form of support from the Department of Landscape Architecture of IPB University towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the indicators of Sustainable Cities and Communities, Quality Education and Partnership For The Goals,” said Dr Akhmad Arifin.

At the Opening Ceremony, the Chairperson of the Committee, Dr Prita Indah Pratiwi explained, “The 2nd Summer Course is held to improve the atmosphere of the international academic environment, maintain cooperation with partner universities and form new cooperation with other partner universities,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture of IPB University Prof Suryo Wiyono officially opened The 2nd Summer Course of Indonesia Tropical Landscape at the Opening Ceremony session, which was also attended by the Director of International Education of IPB University, Puji Mudiana.

The 2nd Summer Course of Indonesia Tropical Landscape presented leading speakers in the field of Landscape Architecture, one of them, Assis Prof Jiang Xiaohuan from Chiba University.

“Chiba University requires each of its students to go abroad through the Study Abroad Program and this programme will continue to be held every year, we hope that cooperation with IPB University will continue,” he said.

The participants were actively involved and expressed their excitement when participating in this programme, they mentioned that this programme provided a deep experience and motivated their learning activities. Other speakers who attended the event were Dr Akhmad Arifin Hadi, with the material “The Importance of Plants in Green Buildings/Infrastructure” and Prof Nappy L. Navarra from the University of The Philippines Diliman with the material “Finding Strength in Vulnerability”. (*/Lp) (IAAS/RUM)
