Director General of Higher Education, Research and Technology (DG Diktiristek), Abdul Haris, attended the Release of Participants of the Higher Education Leadership Capacity Building Programme (PKKPT) for Rectors in 2024 organised by the Directorate of Resources in Jakarta (20/4). This programme is a strategic step to improve the reputation of universities towards a World Class University.

PKKPT is the first programme that aims to increase the leadership capacity of rectors through a sustainable approach to good corporate governance, learning, research, contribution to community life, and continuous improvement in networking and collaboration with stakeholders.

In his speech, the Director General of Higher Education emphasised that the role of rectors or university leaders is very important, because they must be academic leaders and entrepreneurs. The integration of these two functions is the key to success for university leaders.

“The challenges of higher education are enormous. As an academic leader, the rector must set an example and ensure that the university fulfils the main targets in the tri dharma of higher education. University leaders must have a strategy to achieve this, including in education, research, and community service. All of this cannot be separated from the academic reputation which is key, as well as the ability to innovate and generate revenue as an entrepreneur,” said Haris.

Haris hoped that the participants could take the journey of this capacity building seriously, and hoped that the journey and experience with Seoul National University (SNU) Korea in particular, could be expressed in the form of concrete cooperation, each university would have a role to take cooperation with SNU in one of the fields, because it could be one of the targets.

After going through the selection, IPB University was chosen as the implementing university of PKKPT for Rector in 2024. This programme is supported by the Higher Education Endowment Fund (DAPT) for the Higher Education Improvement Programme towards World Class, through collaboration between the Directorate of Resources, Directorate of Institutions, Airlangga University, and IPB University.

In his brief remarks, the Rector of the University, Prof Arif Satria, thanked the Director of Resources for giving trust to IPB University to be the implementer of the PKKPT programme. He revealed the option of choosing SNU, because SNU is one of the institutions that has a history that is not too far away from Indonesia, especially since South Korea has almost the same start as Indonesia.

“The lesson for us is that the same start but produces something different because there are different strategies. Therefore, we will not only learn about universities, because universities are part of national policy,” he said.

He hopes that this programme will make a significant contribution in advancing the quality of higher education in Indonesia and producing qualified and globally competitive leaders.

PKKPT Rector Year 2024, with the theme Entrepreneur Leadership Training, sent 17 Rectors of State Universities to participate in activities for seven days at Seoul National University (SNU) South Korea. The activities include seminars, workshops, case studies, self-paced learning, and networking with industries and universities in South Korea, involving resource persons and facilitators from various related institutions.
