School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB) IPB University had the opportunity to invite Prof. Takeshige Otoi from Tokushima University Japan, 30/4. In the public lecture, Prof. Takeshige Otoi delivered material on Development of Artificial Intelligence-Based Method for Diagnosing The Right Time for Insemination in Cattle.

Prof Ni Wayan Kurniani Karja, Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, SKHB IPB University said, this activity is very important to add insight for students and lecturers, especially related to insemination technology. She said, technology for the insemination process is needed in order to improve the reproductive ability of cattle.

On this occasion, Prof Otoi explained about the artificial intelligence or AI-based application developed and utilized to find out the right insemination time on cattle farms in Japan. He said the idea of developing this technology originated from the declining trend of cattle pregnancy rates in Japan.

“The more cows that are farmed, the less time is available for farmers to observe the time of their cows’ insemination,” Prof Otoi said.

Therefore, Prof Otoi said, a special tool was developed with a camera at the end to observe the opening of the cervix in cows. He explained that the images obtained from the special tool were connected to a smartphone and sent to the server for processing.

“The data obtained are images of the reproductive parts of the cow, the data is then selected and processed using machine learning,” added Prof Otoi.

The results of this processing can come out in seconds so that farmers can decide whether to inseminate or not. “Generally, data that shows the possibility of pregnancy above 70 percent if inseminated at that time is the right time to inseminate,” he explained. (AP/Ra) (IAAS/ZQA)
