Unique, Organic Adhesives from Chicken Feathers and Cow Bones Waste by IPB Students
Indonesian students are constantly trying to create a variety of innovations that can be a solution to the problems that exist in the environment. Sometimes, the innovations created by students are the use of materials that were unthinkable beforehand. Such as innovation in the field of research by Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) students. They made organic adhesives from waste of chicken feathers and cow bones.
This research innovation succeeded in getting funding from the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti RI) through Student Creativity Program (PKM) in the field of Research in 2018. They were Rahayu Lestari, Erik Kurniawan and Hasana Aqiroh under the supervision of Iyep Komala, SPt, M, Si. they succeeded in utilizing waste that disrupts the environment to become innovations of economic value.
Chickens are known as a poultry whose meat and eggs are favored by the community. Chicken sales and consumption continue to increase from year to year. With the increased consumption of chicken by the community, the generated waste will also increase so that it makes buildup. Therefore, it is necessary to make an innovation using the waste from chickenconsumption in order to avoid buildup.
"Chicken feathers are part of chicken waste that generates a lot of trash. So we think to use this chicken feather waste to be something that is economically valuable and reduce waste due to chicken feather waste. Chicken feathers contain keratin protein that has good enough adhesive power. In addition, we combine it with cow bone. Cow bone contains collagen which also has high adhesive power. Therefore both of these wastes can be utilized as raw material for glue," said Rahayu as the leader of this research program.
Some of the advantages of organic adhesive from chicken feathers and cow bone waste are the main ingredients obtained from easy-to-obtain waste, and uncomplicated manufacturing processes. One way of collagen extraction is by concentrating acid into adhesives. Chicken feathers that are used was the waste of chicken processing place, restaurants and also household waste.
They hope that organic adhesive from waste can be utilized by the community and also awareness and insight of waste utilization into a useful resource in society should be more optimized.
