IPB University has set a vision to become a research-based university, and a leader in innovation for national independence towards a Techno-Socio-Entrepreneurial University that excels at the global level in the fields of agriculture, marine, and tropical biosciences.

Therefore, Prof Henry M Manik, Lecturer of the Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) IPB University, participated in the 2nd Decade Regional Conference and the 11th WESTPAC International Marine Science Conference, organised by the Government of Thailand recently in Bangkok, Thailand.

“The conference aims to present the current status of ocean knowledge, review the current state of achievement of the Ocean Decade of Action, identify future priorities, and refresh and further catalyse partnerships and implementation of concrete actions for ocean-based transformative solutions to sustainability challenges in the Asia-Pacific region,” Prof Henry said.

“This conference activity can improve reputation at the global level because it can produce international publications, network collaboration with stakeholders and strengthen international collaboration,” said Prof Henry.

He also argued that the oceans, seas and coastal areas in the Western Pacific have extraordinary ecological, social and economic importance.

“The region has a major influence on regional and global climate, serves as the epicentre of the world’s marine biodiversity, contributes to the world’s seafood supply, and hosts the world’s maritime shipping routes. Therefore, the ocean must play a central role in the world’s efforts towards sustainable development,” said Prof Henry.

He continued, given all that is at stake, the United Nations (UN) Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, proclaimed in 2017 by the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, is a very important gathering.

“The UN Decade of Oceans Opening Conference for the Western Pacific and surrounding region, held from 25 to 26 November 2021, marked the emergence of initial efforts across the region in the development and implementation of substantive Decade Actions,” Prof Henry said.

Prof Henry continued, three years later, the 2nd Decade Regional Conference and the 11th WESTPAC International Marine Science Conference were held, which is a joint conference that brings together various marine stakeholders. (*/Lp) (IAAS/RUM)
