A total of 44 young veterinarians from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bogor Agricultural University (FKH-IPB) took their professional oath at the Open Senate Meeting held at the Jannes Humuntal Hutasoit Auditorium, Dramaga IPB Campus, Bogor (25/7). The taking of oath and inauguration was led by the Dean of FKH IPB, Prof. Dr. drh. Srihadi Agungpriyono, witnessed by the Rector of IPB, Dr. Arif Satria, Chairman of the Indonesian Veterinary Association (PDHI), Dr. drh. Heru Setijanto, PAVet (K), Chairman of Senate FKH IPB, Prof. Dr. drh. Bambang Purwantara, FKH Professors, and lecturers of FKH IPB.

With the graduation of 44 new veterinarians, so far FKH IPB recorded has graduated as many as 6,272 veterinarians. The oath-taking becomes the duty of every veterinary graduate and is an affirmation that the authority and occupation of the veterinary profession is closely related to the life and salvation of sentient beings. This oath also becomes the norm and ethical corridor in veterinary relationships with clients, fellow veterinary colleagues and the public.

"Veterinarians are not just doctors who have clinical skills for treatment and healing, veterinarians have a responsibility and role in participating in realizing environmental health and public health through quality assurance and environmental health. Veterinarians are also responsible for the sufficiency of food material of animal and animal products quality through the fulfillment of healthy and productive animals. Veterinarians also have authority and role in the policy of control and prevention of infectious diseases and zoonoses and animal welfare. Veterinarians not only deal with one species, but all animals that are linked to humans, farm animals, pets, animals kept as hobbies, riding animals, sports animals, poultry, wildlife and aquatic animals,” said Prof. Srihadi.

He added, with the wide job potential, veterinary graduates become one of the much-needed college graduates in the job market. Especially in line with the increase in economic growth, the rapid development of livestock industry, feed and veterinary medicine as well as increased regional and territorial development in agriculture and livestock. Until now, veterinary graduates are always absorbed by the market.

"Among the 44 new veterinarians who swear an oath, there is one Malaysian citizen named, Tahniah. From the information we get from alumni in Malaysia, the need for veterinarians in Malaysia is very high. At present there are about 2,500 veterinarians in Malaysia while their current needs are about 6,000 vets. That's why the veterinary study program is one of the most highly studied courses there. Alhamdulillah, until now veterinary graduate of FKH IPB became the preferred veterinarian in Malaysia. Not only Malaysian citizens, alumni veterinarian citizens of Indonesia also began to work in Malaysia," he said.

Meanwhile, Rector of IPB, Dr. Arif Satria accompanied by Vice Rector for Education and Student Affairs, Dr. Ir. Drajat Martianto on the same occasion also gave directions to the newly appointed veterinarian. According to him in the era of rapid change, where people always prioritize the use of technology, the veterinarian should never give up with the sophistication of the technology. The technology will lead to a better and more useful way so that in the future veterinarians can easily solve animal disease problems more quickly, precisely and accurately.

"The needs of veterinarians at this time is very urgent to be realized because the role of veterinarians is very big in improving the welfare of the community through the consumption of healthy animal meat and maintained quality. Without the presence of a veterinarian it will be difficult to maintain and improve the quality of public health that consume animal meat. Especially now, more and more animal diseases are found, so it becomes important to monitor the circulation from upstream to downstream," said Rector.

The Rector added that veterinarians should be able to demonstrate their role in the provision of safe, healthy, whole and halal (ASUH) animal food, and be able to anticipate various animal diseases that may decrease the production and reproduction of livestock, and diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans (zoonoses). Veterinarians should also be able to provide veterinary clinical care, disease prevention and provision of medical supplies. Another role of veterinarians that is also important is to conduct various public health protection, especially supervision of animal products that will be marketed.
