PATENT-BASED INNOVATION OF IPB TO SUPPORT  THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDONESIAN ECONOMY
Toward HKI Award  Category “University with the Highest Number of Commercial Patents”

As a research-based university, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) has  produced a lot of intellectual works in agriculture, marine and tropical biosciences. IPB tries its best effort to protect those  intellectual works by registering them in the  official Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), as intangible assets, are a key factor in the competitiveness of your business in the global economy. Thus, the total of filings numbers of IPR, especially a patent, has not been the only key performance indicators for IPR Management, but also to be one key performance indicators for university such as IPB. Up to 2014, the  cumulative number of patent-based invention of IPB is 290, 69 out of them have been granted. In addition, IPB also has registered 13 IPB’ trade-marks, and 4 out them have been granted.
 
Currently, the paradigm of university Tridharma has shifted, in addition to its regular roles in education the university is also demanded to have active role in economic development, in particular the transfer of technology or commercialization of research results. Therefore, since its reorganization to change its status as IPB State Owned Legal Entity / BHMN (PP No. 154/2000) into the current Legal Entity State Universities / PTN BH (PP No. 66/2013), in a well-planned and systematic program IPB has initiated commercialization efforts for its research results, in particular its that patent-based one (IPR), both through academic business units, supporting business units, and commercial business unit. IPR system has been utilized by IPB as the businesses instrument to run its business its IPR-based business management cycle. 
 
Since 2003 IPB has established PT Bogor Life Science & Technology (BLST) as its commercial business unit of IPB holding company. PT BLST has been mandated to channelized its scientific and technology innovations developed by IPB for  commercial. Under the coordination of PT BLST, IPB established its official outlets  to market its innovative products developed by IPB and its alumni. IPB actively implemented various promotional plans for its innovation through exhibitions, business meetings, print media, join-cooperation with the electronic and print media, and with other intermediary institutions such as the Business Innovation Center (BIC). In the last  7 years (2008-2014) 278 or 38.56% out of 721 of the most prospective innovations of Indonesia selected BIC were produced by IPB. 
 
Through the alumni network, its research or working unit, IPB continues to improve its research collaboration with industrial companies to enable IPB customize its products suitable for market needs. As a means and provide meetings forum between researchers and industry, IPB has established the ABGC Forum (Academic-Business-Government-Community) for the Food and Agriculture of IPB. In addition, the Forum will also assist IPB in the development of its Scientific Park  in Taman Kencana. Since 2012, under the Commercialization of Innovation Products for Prospective IPB Program, it provides seed money amounted to Rp 500 million / innovation for funding support of start-up prospective innovations. Moreover, currently IPB also developed a TRL system (Technology Readiness Level) to assess the readiness of research results and develop "Open Innovation" platform to cooperate with PT HYVE Innovation Indonesia. 
 
Various challenges in the commercialization efforts for IPB patents becomes valuable experiences in seeking solutions to work better. Up to now, the total IPB innovation-based patents granted for commercialization was about 6% of total patents have been filed for registered at the Indonesian Copyright Office (the list of innovation is attached). In addition to patent-based innovations, IPB has also marketed the commercial seeds of crop varieties, among others are papaya Callina known as Papaya California, chili CH3, and 3S paddy rice. Some science-based innovation and IPB expertise that has been applied in industries including the bird flu vaccine Bird Close 5.1 manufactured by PT IPB Shigeta and production of biological material for the production of polio vaccine in cooperation with PT Bio Farma Tbk.  
 
Patents-based innovation produced by IPB is expected to contribute to the economic development of Indonesia. Various activities undertaken by IPB in its efforts to commercialize its research results have showed the sharing of IPB experiences to improve the commercialization efforts of Indonesia towards the independency of technology.
