Many myths have developed about the relationship between cats’ body color and their nature. So far, many think “orange cats” are often labeled naughty or barbaric. Conversely, the character of white cats tends to be calm and even called lazy. Is this myth true?

“Cat characters are not determined by the color of their bodies so this is a myth,” said Dr drh Leni Maylina, lecturer at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science (SKHB) IPB University.

She explained that these myths tend to arise because of stereotypes or personal experiences and cannot be generalized. For example, cats that are more active and mischievous may have personalities that tend to be more dominant or have more energy, but this has more to do with individual traits than their coat color.

“Scientific research shows that a cat’s personality is more influenced by genetic factors, early life experiences during socialization with humans, and the environment they grow up in,” she explains.

For example, she continues, cats that are raised with enough love and attention tend to have friendlier personalities, regardless of their coat color.

Some cat breeds are also known to have certain characteristics. For example, the Siamese cat breed is often considered more vocal and active.

In addition, scientifically, a cat’s personality can also be determined from the environment. She says, “White or orange cats can have very diverse characters, depending on how they were raised and their experiences in interactions with humans or other animals.”

“So, although there are many stories or common perceptions about the character of cats based on their body color, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim,” she said.

Furthermore, Dr drh Leni explained that understanding a cat’s character requires time and attention to their behavior in various situations. Cats, like humans, have unique personalities and can show their traits through daily interactions.

The best way to know a cat’s character is to understand its behavior and body language. Some parts of a cat’s body that can give clues about its character include:

1. Facial expression

Cats that are comfortable and not threatened will usually have slightly open eyes with a relaxed facial expression. Conversely, cats that are scared or feel threatened will have their eyes wider open and their face will be more tense.

2. Body position

Body position can also reveal how a cat is feeling. Cats that sit with an upright posture and a raised tail usually indicate that they feel confident and comfortable. A slouched cat or a tail bent between the hind legs could indicate fear or anxiety.

3. Tail

The tail is an important indicator in understanding a cat’s mood. Cats with their tails erect or curled at the end are usually happy and confident. Conversely, a cat with its tail folded or bent under its body may be feeling fearful, threatened or uncomfortable.

4. Voice

Cats that talk or “meow” a lot may indicate that they need attention or want to interact with humans. A quieter cat may be more independent or not feel the need to communicate.

5. Other physical actions

Cats that bite or scratch frequently may be more dominant or have a more active and curious personality. While cats that prefer to sleep or relax in a quiet place may show a more laid-back and reserved nature. (IAAS/LAN)
