The Student Organisation Capacity Strengthening Program Team (PPK Ormawa), Animal Nutrition and Food Student Association (Himasiter) IPB University invited the community of Sinarsari Village, Bogor, West Java to optimise the potential of family medicinal plants (toga) as herbal medicine through the Hayuk Sehat program.

Student representative of PPK Ormawa Himasiter IPB University, Dodi Wahyudi explained, the Hayuk Sehat programme was implemented through several activities, namely Tantano (Planting Family Medicinal Plants) and Jamber (Making Herbs and Nutritious Supplies). The activities were held at the Sinarsari Village Multipurpose Building and the farmer women’s group (KWT) land attended by the community, KWT members, family welfare empowerment (PKK) mothers, Agrianita Faculty of Animal Husbandry IPB University as a partner and a number of lecturer representatives.

Toga is a selected type of medicinal plant used for first aid. Toga is also known as light medicines to treat several kinds of diseases, such as fever and cough.

“Land utilisation by the community and KWT in Sinarsari Village that has not been optimal is one of the ideas for the implementation of the Tantano activity. This activity is expected to enable the village community to utilise the village land properly. But not only village land, the community is also expected to be able to apply the planting of family medicinal plants in their yards,” said Dodi.

Tantano and Jamber activities are interrelated. The reason is that these activities combine environmental and health aspects. Not only the utilisation of land as medicinal plants, but the community is also able to utilise the results of the toga planting into herbal medicine that is beneficial for the health of the body.

Both Himasiter IPB University programmes were supported by the village government and the community of Sinarsari Village. When doing hands-on practice, the villagers showed high enthusiasm. According to Raya, one of the residents of Sinarsari Village, the activities carried out by the PPK Ormawa Himasiter IPB University team are very useful, because residents can make herbal medicine independently at a very low price and good taste.

Another resident, Nurhamidah added, “The activity is very useful, so that mothers make more use of their yards to plant toga and the results can be processed by themselves. Thank you IPB University students for the knowledge and motivation, may you always be healthy.”

Tantano was carried out by providing medicinal plant seeds from the PPK Ormawa Himasiter IPB University team such as turmeric, red ginger, ginger and galangal. This activity was accompanied by agricultural extension workers. Meanwhile, the Jamber activity was carried out with a resource person, Nugrahini Rahayu. She demonstrated how to make instant powdered turmeric herbal medicine with only 30 minutes.

The PPK Ormawa Himasiter IPB University team has great hopes with the implementation of this programme. It is hoped that the programme can arouse the enthusiasm of the community to pay more attention to the environment and health.

The existence of the Hayuk Sehat program can also facilitate the handling of health and management of vacant land processing which can be used as an opportunity to be commercialised so as to support the economy of the Sinarsari Village community. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
