IPB University Rector’s Inspiration: Becoming a Perfect Human with a Growth Mindset and Future Practice

The Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria, shared that growth mindset and future practice are the main capital in becoming a complete human being. These two keywords are important in preparing the young generation to become future leaders amidst various disruptions.
“Academic grades are no longer the main determining factor for success, instead favouring a growth mindset that emphasises soft skills such as integrity and creativity. This is owned by agile learners who are able to control and take advantage of opportunities without hesitation,” stated Prof Arif. According to him, this ability is one of the main characteristics of a truly perfect human being.
He conveyed this in the event of ‘Ramadan Kareem Inspiration’ with Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS), 16/4, in front of UMS students and scholars. Present as the main speaker, Prof Arif also shared his perspective on responding to challenges and strategies for dealing with the disruption era.
“A change of mindset from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset is a main capital for human beings to survive and face the challenges in the era of disruption and digitalization. Orientation to future practice is also needed for determining the nation’s progress to become a trendsetter of change,” he said.
He also said that in the midst of world conditions that are full of uncertainties, everybody needs a qualified skillset. This skillset will only be owned by agile learners who are adaptive, flexible, collaborative, and have a complex problem-solving ability.
All of these characteristics of an agile learner, said Prof Arif, will create brand new innovations for the nation. In addition, innovation is closely linked to gross domestic product per capita.
“This growth mindset needs to be instilled in the young generation so that they are aware of their capabilities to grow and develop in order for them to change their general characteristics, such as talents and skills. Later on, they will be able to make a great contribution to increase the creation of various innovative products in Indonesia,” he explained.
Apart from that, Prof Arif continued, thinking outside the box is also important in order to be able to create new approaches in communication and collaboration so that the adaptation process can be faster.
“This is also related to future practice, a vision which encourages changes based on the future and is able to create many possibilities. It is different from the best practices, which only imitate existing methods,” he said. (IAAS/SNI)
