Helping Students Overcome Problems, IPB University Vocational School Guidance and Counseling Commission Conducts Counselor Training

The condition of IPB University Vocational School (SV) students who are diverse and come from various backgrounds and the problems they face require proper handling. Based on this, the IPB University Vocational School Guidance and Counseling Commission held training for counselors with the theme: "Level up the Way of Learning: Create a Great Impact".

"A total of 40 counselors attended and the event was filled by 2 speakers. Thank you for the extraordinary cooperation of the committee in preparing this event," said Ir CC Nurwitri, DEA, Head of Guidance and Counseling Commission SV IPB University during the opening of the event at the Gedung Delta, Kampus IPB Gunung Gede, 18/3.

Dr Bagus P Purwanto as Vice Dean of the Vocational School of IPB University of Academic and Student Affairs warmly welcomed all counselor training participants. He hopes that the counselors can handle various student problems.

“The backgrounds of counselors at SV also vary. Therefore, it is necessary to provide good training so that counselors' understanding can increase so that counseling activities at SV IPB University can run well," he said.

On that occasion, Nurmala, MPsi as the resource person said, there are several things that a counselor needs to pay attention to, such as being genuine by showing openness to counselees. This will build mutual trust so that the counselee is open to telling stories.

“Accept the counselee as they are with all tehir strengths and weaknesses, so that the counselee feels valued as an individual. In addition, show efforts to understand the counselee's point of view, so that the counselee feels free to present himself as they are," she said.

Meanwhile, Nina Ratna Maulina, MPsi in her presentation revealed that the ability to handle counselees is a basic thing that must be possessed by counselors. "Therefore, this training is expected to be able to improve the abilities of SV IPB University counselor lecturers in dealing with student problems," she said.

In the same vein, Dr Doni Sahat Tua Manalu, one of the counselors at SV IPB University said, counseling skills are an important aspect that greatly influences the success of the counseling process built by the counselor.

"Thus, the counselor's mastery of these skills is a bridge to the establishment of effective interpersonal relationships which are expected to lead to facilitating the counselee's development towards optimal development," he said.

The training was continued by giving examples of cases that could be handled by counselors in the counseling process and by doing role playing. It was seen that the participants were enthusiastic when doing the exercise (role playing) in the group.

"Lecturers and counselors play a role in dealing with various student problems. Through today's counselor training, hopefully the counselor lecturers at SV IPB University will be more competent in handling student problems, especially related to mental health," said Made Gayatri Anggar Kasih, STP, MSi as the chief executive of the training.
