IPB Produces Barista through Coffee School

To answer the enthusiasm and interest in learning coffee, the Directorate of Student Affairs and Career Development of the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) in collaboration with the Ranin Coffee House held a "Coffee School" for IPB students both undergraduate, vocational and postgraduate programs. For the first batch, there were several participants who had gone through analysis, knowledge tests. They conducted basic training from Tejo Pramono at the Community Nutrition Teaching Lab, Dramaga IPB Campus, Bogor (10-11 and 17-18 / 11). All participants from IPB students both undergraduate, vocational and postgraduate programs received scholarships from the Rector of IPB, Dr. Arif Satria to take part in this activity.
In his speech, Dr. Arif said that the current era is the era of coffee enthusiasts and baristas is one of the prestigious professions today. IPB as a college in the science of agriculture and food has initiated a course to become a cupper and coffee maker.
"Coffee schools can be a place to create communities, because coffee has an increasingly good value, said Dr.Arif.
The selected students get basic knowledge and practices about the taste and smell of coffee (cupping) as well as manual brewing and various brewing creations. From brewing coffee with French press to G60.
"on the first week we teach flavor and cupping, because the sensory nature requires skills and sensitivity that must be honed. The taste and origin of coffee illustrates the character of the coffee presented at the customer's table," said Tejo.
Coffee samples that being used came from various regions in Indonesia, namely Lampung Robusta coffee, Manggarai Arabica, and Semende Arabica. This coffee is taken directly from the farmer.
According to Tejo, the size of coffee powder, water temperature and type of water can affect the taste of coffee. Defective coffee beans can also affect the taste of coffee.
"I hope that IPB does not only hold a Coffee School, but other facilities such as learning about commodities and processing in today's industry in detail. The course curriculum needs to be adapted so that it can follow the current era. "Coffee School" can be a real answer to the development of coffee, "said Tejo.
Ranin Coffee House is a coffee shop that focuses on food sovereignty, especially the sovereignty of consumers and coffee producers. Ranin's Coffee House was established in 2012 and was founded by Tejo Pramono and Uji Sapitu. They have received disciplinary education at IPB. Not just a coffee shop, Rumah Kopi Ranin prioritizes taste with manual brewing. Visitors can also enjoy coffee by choosing their favorite brewing tool. (jhn)
