The Association of Mathematics Students (Gumatika), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) organized “Actuarial Training”, at Mandiri Auditorium, IPB Dramaga Camous (29/9). This training is a part of “The 7th IPB Mathematics Challenges (IMC)”. IMC is an annual event of Gumatika which presents the experts in mathematics field that aims to introduce the roles of mathematics in the work world.

The event was opened by introducing actuarial science by William Duggan, B.Sc., B.Ed., M.Sc. as Field Director of READI Project. READI is a cooperation project between The Government of Canada, Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Manulife Insurance which has been conducted by University of Waterloo. “In Canada, with a population of one-eighth of Indonesia’s population, it already has about 5000 actuaries, but in Indonesia the number of actuaries is still below 600,” he explained.

Actuarial science learns about mathematics, statistics, social, business even politics to manage or minimize the risk of a problem. To become an actuary is not only skillful in calculating, but must be proficient in multidisciplinary sciences,” said Nurdin Kosasih, ASAI, PA, during facilitating this training. Also present Yusuf Hidayat Kalla, M.Si., ASAI, the representative from the Society of Actuaries of Indonesia (PAI).

Meanwhile, according to H.M. Wahyu Wibowo, SE, MM, MBA, Director of Risk Management and Information Technology of PT Jasa Raharja said in the era when everything is computerized, a science must be understood, do not be lazy and be deceived by computer.

“Actuary itself is a job that is now highly needed and its existence in Indonesia is still very rare. Even to pass it, required practices and efforts because it is indeed classified as a job that is difficult to achieve. Therefore, we want to encourage and to accommodate the participants and everyone who want to be a part of actuary to stay optimistic,” conveyed Nurul Fathiah as Chief Executive.

This actuarial training was attended by approximately 100 participants from both IPB and non-IPB students. (qa)
