Alumni of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences IPB Share Story with IPB Students

As a form of caring for students, alumni of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Bogor Agricultural University (FMIPA IPB) of batch 30 held a 30 Love Talkshow (Inspirational Alumni Stories). The 30 Love Talkshow is a series of activities leading up to the 30th IPB Silver Reunion. The talkshow was held on Saturday (8/9) at the Lecture Building A of the Faculty of Agriculture, IPB.
"We are very grateful to be able to meet with alumni because they are important stakeholders in college and we really hope that students can get additional soft skills from alumni," said Dr. Ir. Sri Nurdiati, M.Sc, Dean of FMIPA IPB in her speech.
Dr. Sri Nurdiati also hopes that the alumni can provide support and assistance in improving IPB, especially FMIPA, in preparing students to face the post-campus world.
The 30 Love Talkshow aims to establish communication with alumni and as a media between alumni and students. Not only that, in this talkshow, alumni were given the opportunity to share their inspirational stories to students. On this occasion, there were seven alumni of FMIPA IPB of batch 30 who shared stories. The seven alumni are Dr. Ir. Rokhis Khomarudin, M.Sc, Cecep Hendra, S.Si, MBA, Iwan Setiawan, S.Si, Dr. Djoni Hartono, S.Si, ME, Dedy Tri Riyadi, S.Si, Lodegasi Lindely, S.Si, and Nasruddin Suyuti, S.Si.
The opportunity to share stories begins with Nasruddin Suyuti, S.Si, Marketing and Sales Manager at PT. Hokkan Indonesia. As a marketing company, Nasruddin had been a top sales company he had occupied. His journey to become a top sales was not easy, he had applied for hundreds of jobs in chemistry field but failed. His journey to sales began with selling birth control pills in a pharmaceutical company and often moving to another companies. Although Nasruddin was a chemistry graduate, he felt that he was not wrong in choosing the way to become a salesman. Because this sales is an interesting profession to pursue.
"Whatever we do, we can certainly learn. Although there are many failures, don't ever feel that failure is a downturn, but an opportunity to rise," Nasruddin concluded.
As with Nasruddin, Cecep Hendra, S.Si, an MBA who is a graduate of Statistics, is the Director of PT. Karsa Abdi Husada, a pharmaceutical company that is actually not its field. The journey to becoming a company director is not easy for him. He never agreed with his parents regarding the establishment of a pharmaceutical company that he currently manages. According to him, pharmaceutical companies especially hospitals are not a promising business company. But after he was involved in the medical world, he finally decided to help realize the ideals of his parents to establish a pharmaceutical company.
According to him, there is a very powerful force in every effort to realize the ideals, namely the power of prayer. With the power of prayer, no matter how difficult the problem will certainly feel light and easy.
Unlike the two previous speakers, Dr. Ir. Rokhis Khomarudin, M.Sc, explained more about his work as director of the National Aeronautics and Space Institute (LAPAN). As Head of Remote Sensing Application Center of LAPAN, Dr. Rokhis, recounts his experience working in the field of remote sensing. He said, remote sensing is a combination of science and art. Because through remote sensing technology, an object can be identified without touching the object. Remote sensing technology is one of the important technologies that must be owned by every country, because who can master outer space, it will rule the world.
"Unfortunately this remote sensing technology has not become a serious concern for the government, even though with a large area, without the support of satellite or remote sensing data, Indonesia will be far behind other countries," said Dr. Rokhis.
Remote sensing technology can be used for various purposes, especially in agriculture such as rice growth mapping, mapping of rice production, mapping of agricultural land use, and mapping of damage to rice fields. Besides explaining the importance of remote sensing technology in Indonesia, Dr. Rokhis also explained that to be a successful person needs to process. What's more with the presence of friends, because the role of a friend is very important in achieving goals.
While Lodegasi Lindely, S.Si, President Director of Rubber and Tea Plantations Companies, expressed hope to IPB students that they would be more willing to directly engage in agriculture. As the leader of an agricultural company, Lodegasi also invited Indonesian youth not to leave agriculture.
"Don't left it behind, even though it's hard to be a farmer, but the farmer is a big business opportunity in the future," he concluded.
Dr. Djoni Hartono, S.Si, ME, lecturer in Economics at the University of Indonesia, has a steep way of life. He said, during his time at IPB, Djoni learned valuable lessons. Starting from the struggle for survival, perseverance and discipline in learning, and other moral values that are not taught on other campuses.
"During my study at IPB I struggled to live, where I lived at the time, the cheapest rented house," said Djoni.
Through his experience during college, Djoni motivated students so that they would not be complacent with the facilities obtained. He said, he had to study harder, if necessary the mattress in the bedroom was replaced with a stone so that he could feel how hard this life struggle was.
In contrast to the two alumni who are involved in the literary world, Iwan Setyawan, S.Si and Dedy Tri Riyadi, S.Si further invite students to express themselves in the world through literature and artwork.
Iwan Setyawan, the author of the novel "9 Summer 10 Autumns", invites IPB students to be more open and more familiar with the world around them. According to him, many IPB alumni lack confidence and students are more likely to close themselves.
"It's time for IPB students to express themselves, learn to write journals, learn foreign languages in English, Japanese, or others. "I have to read a lot of books and learn public speaking too, especially learning about debates," said Iwan.
As with Iwan, Dedy also invited IPB students to love literature because Indonesian literature currently still lags behind other countries. According to him, the embodiment of love for literature is not only limited to writing poetry or short stories, but can be in the form of paintings. He also regretted the absence of writings and literature produced by IPB students published in the national media.
"Although IPB has no literature department, it is important to develop literature. Through literature, we can describe who we really are," concluded Dedy.
At the end of the talkshow session, Dedy had the opportunity to read his poem entitled "In the Airplane." The poem illustrates the life process he has lived to date. In his poetry, he advised not to regret the past and prepare for the future. (FM)
