FKH IPB Deploys Animal and Carcass Health Examiners for Eid al-Adha 1439 H

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), in coordination with Directorate of Collaboration and Alumni Affairs of IPB helds an event to commemorate the deployment of animal and carcass health examiners in the light of Eid al-Adha 1439 H/2018 M. The event was done in Jannes Humuntal Hutasoit Auditorium, Faculty of Animal Science (Fapet), IPB Dramaga Campus, Bogor (20/8).

IPB Rector was represented by Secretary of IPB Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM), Prof Dr Ir M Faiz Syuaib, MAgr, said that this program is IPB's contribution to improve and provide service and education for society, specifically about qurban carcass safety and health. This program is also held to improve IPB"s relation with Bogor City's Department of Agriculture, DKI Jakarta Province's Department of Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture, Bogor Regency's Department of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry, Tangerang City's Department of Food Security, and Depok City's Department of Food Security, Agriculture, and Fisheries.

"Examining health of qurban animals can improve society's awareness in properly handling qurban animals, ensure a hygienic slaughters for qurban animals, and ensure the availability of safe, healthy, whole, and halal (ASUH) qurban carcass, according to Islam sharia," he added.

Vice Dean of Resources, Collaboration, and Development of FKH IPB, Dr Drh Trioso Purnawarman said that in order to carry on Tridharma of Higher Education, specifically in community service, FKH IPB has been conducting this collaboration annually with several departments of agriculture or animal husbandry or other departments that are in charge of animal health and veterinary public health (Kesmavet) in the form of examining qurban animal and carcass health.

"This program is done as an active contribution to provide service to society, especially by ensuring qurban carcass's health and safety and to provide community education about the importance of carcass safety and consumers' health. This program involves almost every FKH personnel, including lecturers, students, and education staffs," he explains.

He also added that this year FKH IPB sent examiners to three provinces, which are West Java, DKI Jakarta, and Banten, which are divided into 11 locations, which are Bogor Regency, Bogor City, Sukabumi Regency, Depok City, six regions in DKI Jakarta (Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, South Jakarta, North Jakarta, East Jakarta, and  Seribu Islands) and Tangerang City.

As many as 780 examiners would be deployed to those areas with details as follows: 100 personnels for Bogor Regency, 219 personnels for Bogor City, 100 personnels for Depok, 3 personnels for Sukabumi Regency, 300 personnels for DKI Jakarta, 8 personnels for Seribu Islands and 50 personnels for Tangerang. In addition, 50 lecturers would also actively contribute to help examining the animals' health.

"The examiners assigned for Seribu Islands, Bogor Regency, and Depok City would depart one day before Eid al-Adha, meanwhile those who were assigned for 5 regions in DKI Jakarta, Tangerang City, and Bogor City would depart at the D-day," he explains.

He emphasized that the examiners deployed have been equipped with the technicalities necessary for the examination, which consist of theory, practices, and audiovisual playback about antemortem and postmortem examinations. With this training, the students are expected to be ready to carry on the duty independently, professionally, and can maintain the good reputation of IPB.

"During the examination, the examiners will conduct several activities, which are examining the animals before they are slaughtered (antemortem), examination of animals after they are slaughtered (postmortem), carcass handling process, hygiene, sanitation, and evaluation which will be submitted to related departments for further improvement," he explains.

Head of Department of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry of Bogor Regency, Ir Siti Farikah, MM very much appreciates and welcomes this program, which was initiated by FKH IPB annually in handling qurban animals in communities. She hopes that this collaboration keeps on improving, so that people will understand how to slaughter qurban animals well, especially to ensure qurban carcass health and safety for consumption. (Ard)
