Knowing the importance of protection against plant varieties produced by innovators of Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), Directorate of Innovation and Entrepreneurship IPB in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) RI held Workshop on Plant Variety Protection (PVT). The PVT workshop was held at the Executive Development Training Center (ETDC) Building, IPB Baranangsiang Campus, Bogor (19/7).

In his speech, Vice Rector for Innovation, Business and Entrepreneurship, Prof. Dr. Erika B Laconi said that IPB has a lot of innovations that must be protected its intellectual property rights. One of them is in the field of plant varieties.

"Getting Intellectual Property (KI) is not easy. Therefore there must be protectio. Because KI is the work of human intelligence that has been through the outpouring of energy, thought, creativity, taste and intention that have value or economic benefits for human life and environment. As a wealth, KI is categorized as an intangible asset that needs to be managed properly with a globally accepted KI protection system, "said Erika B Laconi.

The KI system is a protection against intellectual work based on law and is used as one of the business instruments. Currently, there are seven types of KI that have been developed and validated by law by the Indonesian government, namely Copyright, Patents, Brands and Geographical Indications, Industrial Designs, Integrated Circuit Layout Design (DTLST), Trade Secrets, and Plant Variety Protection (PVT).

In the future, other varieties will get the same treatment, such as fish seeds. Example eels. According to Prof. Erika, the best eel fish in the world is in Indonesia. Even Japan wants to take Indonesian eel fish. Not only that, other seeds need to be protected.

"To protect its cattle varieties, Australia uses chips in all its cows so they are wherever they know they have Australia and the crossings are well monitored. There are currently about 1,450 innovations of IPB work. So this IPB work needs to be protected and also counted in the form of royalty. Therefore, this is what we must learn carefully. Immediately provide protection against our verietas."Explained Erika B Laconi

Hopefully on this workshop, participants who will register the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) can understand the rules that apply, not wrong in recording the results of their work and later this science can be transmitted to another.

Meanwhile, Head of PVP Center and Agriculture Permit Kementan RI, Prof. Erizal Jamal, said that the field of crop protection is still new, not many people know about it. At the end it is for the development of seed industry.

"In the field of plant varieties, PVP rights are not the only systems or mechanisms of protection for a plant variety. A variety of plants can be protected with several protection systems available in Indonesia. Namely PVP rights, registration of varieties, and release of plant varieties. The right to PVP is a right granted to breeders and / or PVP rights holders to use their own breeding variety or to give consent to other persons or legal entities to use it for a certain period of time (Law 29/2000). Registration of crop varieties is an activity to register a variety for the benefit of collecting data on local varieties, "said Erika B Laconi.

The workshop was attended by practitioners, academics and observers related to PVT originating from Java, Sumatera and Papua.(jhn)
