Head of IPB Presents in Indonesian Fish Expert

Masyarakat Iktiologi Indonesia (MII) (Indonesian Ichthyology Society) is one of the Indonesian fish and fisheries professional scientific organization collaboration with Pusat Penelitian Biologi Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) (Biology Research Center Indonesian Institute of Sciences). Limnology-LIPI Research Center, Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries IPB, and Fisheries Research Center Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries presents 10th National Seminar of Fish and 5th Indonesian Ichthyology Society Congress on 8 – 9 May 2018.

This year fish seminar talks about theme “Increasing Concern for Diversity of Fish to Support Sustainability and Fishery Sovereignty in Achieving National Welfare”. This theme reminds about the potential utilization of local fish resources in Indonesia either through fishing and cultivation activities still needs to improve to safeguard food security, increase foreign exchange, and pay attention to its sustainability.

It is also important to do discovering fundamental and application research, collecting information about systematic, biology, ecology, and fish genetic as the base of conservation. Besides the utilization, it needs to work it planned, systematically, and integrated. On other hand, the utilization of fish resources in Indonesia should not only lie in the market valuation of fishery products, but also the preservation of genetic resources, species and ecosystems. Thus, the utilization of fish resources refers to the conservation and sustainable utilization, raw materials, and trade economy.

The lack of further development such us bioprospecting cause the potential of fish resources has not been revealed and utilized optimally. On other hand, the lack of communication among the scientist or researchers and practitioners causes what is revealed has not been utilized well. Also, the lack of knowledge in society about conservation in utilizing fish resources accelerates decline population of certain types. Sustainable utilization of fish resources provides the basis for fishing, domestication, cultivation and processing to be sustainable.

According to them, Head of IPB Dr. Arif Satria delivers about the strong existence of breed stock center for rare fish need to cultivate. “Researchers  must do the research still. Researchers need big support. Research usually in the long run requires comprehensive planning across sectors,” he firms.

This fish seminar presents the experts or the researchers, academics, practitioners and observers of fish coming from research institutes, universities, government agencies, market participants from fish resources and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). (NR)
