Surveying and sea mapping were the necessary things to do to determine the condition of the dynamic waters. One method for conducting the marine surveying and mapping was using the Marine Acoustic Technology. The Acoustic Technology utilized the sound wave propagation to detect, quantify, and do the mapping of the underwater objects such as fish, zooplankton, coral reefs, aquatic base, archaeological objects, and submarines.

Knowledge of the marine acoustic science and technology in Indonesia was still minimal. Therefore, Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and SEAMEO BIOTROP held the 1st Workshop on Acoustic Technology for Ocean Exploration and Conservation.

As the coordinator and resource person of the training was Prof. Henry M. Manik, Ph.D who was also the Professor of Acoustics and Marine Instrumentation, and currently as the Head of the Marine Acoustic Computing Laboratory and Sonar System of Department of ITK of FPIK of IPB.

The opening of the training was conducted by Dr. Jessus C. Fernandez as the Deputy Director of Program of SEAMEO BIOTROP. The enthusiasm of the participants who registered was very high, with the participants who enrolled the training of 225 people, after being selected to qualify for the training to 30 people.

The participants who passed the selection came from various agencies, amongst others Ministry of Fisheries and Marine, Deep Sea Research Center of LIPI Ambon, Research Center for Oceanography of LIPI, Bengkulu University, Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH), Sriwijaya University, Yayasan Terangi, Universitas Sulawesi Barat, PT. Freeport Indonesia, Universitas Cenderawasih, Universitas Indonesia, and Program Management Information and Technology (MIT) Biotrop.

The training took place on 21-25 August 2017 in SEAMEO BIOTROP to follow the theory session, the processing, and the data analysis. Furthermore, in the waters of Tidung Island Kepulauan Seribu was for the data collection at the sea. Data obtained from the sea were then processed to obtain the target strength values and the fish stocks, the zooplankton detection, the coral reefs detection, the mapping of the benthic and marine habitats.

On Marine Acoustic Training, the participants were asked to follow the pre-test, the post-test, the Action Plan for the collaborative research plan among various agencies. The closing of the training was conducted by the Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP, Dr. Irdika Mansur. He explained the vision and mission of SEAMEO BIOTROP and explained the programs that had been successfully done by the institution he led and noted to all trainees to stay put forward the networking in doing research.***
