Globalization has real effect on the social, economic and cultural aspects. One example is the case in Kutai, East Kalimantan, precisely in the village of Loa Tebu, Embalut, and Jembayan Dalam. The potentially and agriculturally rich region of producing rice does not make the local communities resilient to manage it. They even change their livelihood to be workers in a coal mining company.

This was said by Dr. Rillus A. Kinseng, a faculty member of Department of Communications and Community Development of IPB, as a speaker in the Rural Sociology International Conference on Rural Transformation in The Era of Globalization held at IPB International Convention Center (23/10).

No doubt, globalization also affects coastal communities. Dean of the Faculty of Human Ecology IPB, Dr. Arif Satria, said that some 2200 regions of Indonesia are ??disaster-prone areas, inundated by seawater. In addition, about 7800 villages are in risk of tsunamis. This should be of a serious concern of the government, starting from the rehabilitation of community, natural resources, and infrastructure and so on.

Further, Dr. Arif said that this is the right moment, when in Indonesia is in the succession of leadership. Therefore, this activity is expected to provide input for the significant changes in the development community.

This Rural Sociology International Conference was also attended by Santosh Jatrana, a speaker from Deakin Research Institute, Australia. (Mtd)
