IPB University Strengthens International Collaboration with World Universities in Archipelagic Sciences and Small Islands Studies

International Research Institute (LRI) Maritime, Marine and Fisheries (i-MAR) IPB University strengthened international collaboration on the sidelines of the 19th Islands of World Conference (IWC) activities in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on (25-29/6) through Collaborative Meeting with a number of world universities.
The Collaborative Meeting was held with delegates from Delaware University USA (25/6), International Islands and Small State Institute (ISSI), Malta University (26/6), and Mokpo National University, Korea and Groningen University, the Netherlands (28/6).
The collaborative meeting was held in order to strengthen academic and research cooperation in the field of island science and small islands, including transdisciplinary studies in the fields of blue economy, marine policy and climate change, fisheries, and marine science.
“The initiation and strengthening of international cooperation is very important in order to answer the mission of IPB University as Global Southern Leadership in 2028. One of them is to strengthen the position of IPB University in the field of archipelago and small island science which is the main geographical feature of the Asia Pacific, “said Prof Luky Adrianto, Chairman of LRI i-MAR IPB University in the introduction to the meeting.
The meeting with Delaware University, agreed on several cooperation agendas such as joint-lecture on small islands policy, training and capacity building for Indonesian local governments in the field of small islands governance, virtual exchange of lecturers and students related to blue economy studies, marine biotechnology, robotics and marine instrumentation, and integrated coastal and ocean management.
With the University of Malta, cooperation is focused on sending international students in the field of Small Island Studies which is nurtured by IPB University’s Master of Coastal and Marine Resource Management (SPL) Study Program which currently totals 7 people from various Archipelagic and Island State (AIS) Forum member countries namely Indonesia, Madagascar, Republic of Comoros, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Fiji.
Students will be sent to Malta University for two weeks to attend offline lectures. In addition, ISSI Malta University also focuses on research and academic cooperation in the field of blue economy, including circular economy, knowledge transfer to industries, and marine and fisheries science.
Meanwhile, the bilateral meeting with Mokpo National University was led by the Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL) IPB University which focused on small island research and transfer of experience in organizing the 20th Islands of World Conference. The conference is planned to be held in Mokpo City of Island, Korea in June 2026.
The cooperation with Groningen University, the Netherlands is focused on the opportunity to send S2 students and advanced research in the field of islands studies. The cooperation is carried out through the ISLANDS program initiated by Groningen University in collaboration with several universities in Europe.
“All opportunities for cooperation with international partners can begin with academic cooperation such as credit transfer, joint-seminars, and joint-academic courses and research in the fields of maritime, marine and fisheries including islands and small islands,” added Prof Yonvitner, Chairman of PKSPL IPB University.
