IPB University collaborates with Association of Regency Governments Throughout Indonesia (APKASI), the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), the Institute of Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), and the Nusantara Economic Studies Circle (LKEN) held National Symposium and Workshop Nusantaranomics, at the Ballroom of Puri Agung Hotel Grand Sahid Jaya, Jakarta, (27/2).

Nusantaranomics is the form of development initiated by Professor of Political Economy IPB University, Prof Didin S Damanhuri. This development uses a local economic approach to encourage Indonesian political-economic development. This idea is based on the potential and local wisdom that every region has.

“I believe that each region has its own economic strength, of course which is identical with the culture and social life. That strength needs to be developed, thus it becomes one of the pillars of the national economy,” he said. If it was implemented, he said, the Nusantaranomics concept will boost economic growth above eight percent.

His latest invention also reveals that local economies have had good economic resilience in their respective regions. This local resilience was able to support the national economu during the economic crisis in 1998 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prof Didin revealed that the Nusantaranomics will prioritize the local economy such as Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) even though it has not been officially adopted. “I believe that the regional economy has resilience in economic resilience which can not only be an anchor for the regional economy, but an anchor for the national economy,” he said.

The Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) represented by the Director General of Regional Development Development of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dr Teguh Setyabudi welcomed the development based on local wells. This has been in line with the government’s efforts in the process of developing the local economy. Namely through improving the quality of workers through training and developing worker resources, institutional development, determining competitive advantages by paying attention to various factors.

“Including the development of knowledge related to the driving factors of economic activities in each region and developing new innovations based on telecommunications technology,” Teguh said.

Meanwhile, in his remarks, the Rector of IPB University, Prof Dr Arif Satria, SP, M.Si., said that Nusantaranomics can be the foundation for local growth and Indonesia’s contribution in increasing global competitiveness.

“In the midst of the onslaught of Western-style concepts, Indonesia must have its own concept of economic development. At the same time, we are now also increasingly feeling that the reality-based thinking of (local) communities that have historical differences is relatively incompatible with what is happening in Indonesia,” said Prof Dr Arif Satria, SP, M.Si.

At the event which was attended by more than 500 participants consist of regional heads, academics to students, Prof Dr Arif Satria, SP, M.Si. said, the idea of Nusantaranomics by Prof. Didin S Damanhuri could be a source of enlightening for economic thinkers in Indonesia.

“I believe that this idea will be more enlivening, inspiring thinkers in Indonesia to believe that we have our own belief model to construct Indonesia’s own economic model. No longer stuck with glorifying western thoughts because in fact westerners also don’t know what is in Indonesia,” concluded Prof. Arif. (MW/Zul) (IAAS/NVA)
