The Center for Primary Animal Studies (PSSP) for Research and Community Service (LPPM) Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) in collaboration with the Veterinary Association of Veterinary Practitioners Indonesian Laboratory (ADHPHLI) and the Indonesian Association of Veterinary Researchers and Animal Laboratories (P3HLI) held an International Seminar on Animal Experiments at the IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Bogor (23-25 / 7) with the theme of Laboratory Animal Science in Indonesia: Perspective and Future Challenges.

This event is one part of a series of international seminar, product and service exhibition as well as the second national deliberation, whinch are ADHPHLI and P3HLI.

Head of PSSP IPB, Dr. Huda Darusman explained that there is a central role of experimental animals or laboratory animals in the development and scientific progress in the world of research, education to preclinical testing for human and animal health.

"In Indonesia, standards of using and maintenance laboratory animals vary across institutions. Therefore a scientific forum is needed to disseminate and promote the latest knowledge in the field of animal health science and health in order to be able to achieve international standards and uphold the principle of animal welfare, "said Huda Darusman.

This workshop presented Dr. Montip Gettayacamin (AAALAC International), Dr. Vijay Pal Singh (CSIR Institute of Genomic and Integrative Biology, India), Dr. Tharanga Thoradeniya (from Srilanka), Dr. Susie Vogel (Charles River Safety Assassment, Canada), and Dr. Yasmina Paramastri (National University of Singapore). In addition, there are also speakers from Indonesia, namely Prof. Dondin Sajuthi (ADHPHLL IPB), Dr. Raymond Tjandrawinata (PT Dexa Medica), and Dr. Maharani (PT Bio Farma).

Participants get theoretical explanation of ethical principles, animal model selection as well as statistical considerations in the study with experimental animals and followed by simulation of various case scenarios that must be solved together.

Participants of this seminar came from various educational backgrounds and institutions, including academics (IPB, University of Indonesia, University of Gajah Mada, Brawijaya University, University of General Achmad Yani, Krida Wacana University, University of Nusa Cendana, and others), research institutions LIPI, BATAN, Litbangkes, BBlitvet, MRIN) and companies in the field of vaccines and pharmaceuticals (Biofarma, Combiphar, Dexa Medica).

Meanwhile,  Drh. Wiwiek Bagja, an expert in animal welfare as well as the Chairman of the Honorary Council and the PDHI Advisory Board in her keynote speech explained about the Law and Legislation that applicable in Indonesia related to the use of experimental animals based on animal welfare. (jhn)
