Students of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) won the second place in the event of Geo-Environment Student Challenge (GEOS) 2017, National Debat Competition, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). They were Ilham Maulidin, the student of the Department of Agricultural Industrial Technology, Faculty of Agricultural Technology (Fateta) together with Fitri Rosadella and Latiful Akbar of the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA).

The competition was the national student debate competition organized by the Geography Study Club (GSC), Faculty of Geography of  UGM which in 2017 had entered its 10th year. GEOS was the arena for Indonesian youth to show their concerns for the sustainable development that based the regional development through the cross-sector or multidisciplinary. GEOS 2017 raised the theme of “Science Integration on the Paradigm of Sustainable Multisector Development”. The event was held on 3-5 November 2017.

“The topic of debate is related to the issues of sustainable development viewed from the perspective of the regional development through the informal sector activities as the basis of the urban development. Starting from the land conversion, the spatial planning, the meikarta development issue, and other informal sector conditions,” said Ilham.

The competition, which was attended by the national students, consisted of eight best finalists who had successfully passed the national scientific essay selection. The eight finalists consisted of two teams of IPB, 1 team of Universitas Muslim Indonesia, 3 teams of Universitas Gadjah Mada, 1 team of Universitas Sebelas Maret, and 1 team of Mulawarman University.

“In the preliminary round, we get a motion with the topic of “Pemberhentian Ojek Online / Online Taxibike Stoppage”. We declare a firm stance not to stop the online taxibike operation in West Java, due to many advantages obtained by the online taxibike,” said Ilham.

Ilham and the team understood that the biggest challenge in the competition was how to be able to understand the context of the material debate issues provided by the committee.

“Almost all of our team members are not experts or coming from the spatial layout, the landscape, or even the remote sensing and the geography. However, the things actually spur us to learn,” concluded Ilham.(IR/NM)
