Students from Malaysia participate in the Summer Course of the Faculty of Animal Science of IPB
Department of Nutrition Science and Feed Technology of the Faculty of Animal Science of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) held the second Summer Course on 22-31 July 2018. The theme of this summer course was Exotic Tropical Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology. The program was attended by 22 students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Udayana University, Tanjungpura University and SMKN Kuala Mandor.
This summer course program was intended to improve students' understanding of germplasm of livestock or tropical exotic animals such as sheep, dairy goats, horses, chicken, Bali starlings and spotted deer. Participants also received material on feed management and the conservation strategies. The tropical pasture model and animal feed processing technology were also introduced.
"The program is conducted within ten days with classroom sessions in the Department of Nutrition Science and Feed Technology and field practice sessions on several farms. The lectures provided consist of Exotic Tropical Feeds, Tropical Pasture Management, Feeding Management and Reproduction of Garut Sheep, Feeding Management of Renggong Horse for Dancing Performance, Feeding Management and Conservation of Bali Starling and Spotted Deer, Feeding Management of Pelung and Laughing Chicken, as well as Feeding Management of Dairy Goat and Feed Formulation. The farms visited are the conservation area of Bali Starling and Spotted Deer in Citeureup, Garut Sheep in Gadog, Renggong Horse in Sumedang, as well as Dairy Goat and Timor Deer in Ciwidey," said the person in charge of the program, Dr. Ir. Dewi Apri Astuti, MS.
In addition to getting the material in the classroom and in the field, participants also followed a joint activity program at the Bogor Botanical Garden. This activity was aimed to build relationship among the participants. The participants were expected to actively join various activities undertaken. This Summer Course program will be re-implemented in 2019. (**/ZSP/Zul)
