63rd Anniversary: Rector Reinforces IPB University’s Development Direction
IPB University celebrated its 63rd anniversary. The anniversary celebrations began with an Open Session held at the Andi Hakim Nasoetion Auditorium on the IPB Dramaga Campus in Bogor on Tuesday (9/1).
On this occasion, Rector Dr Alim Setiawan Slamet reaffirmed IPB University’s development direction through three principles: inclusivity, prosperity, and sustainability.
Inclusivity in Education
The Rector stated that these three principles serve as the foundation for IPB University as it navigates the changing times while strengthening the university’s contribution to society and the nation.
“Can small scale farmers use this technology? Can it help fishermen with simple boats? Can it improve the well being of fish farmers and rural communities?” he asked.
According to him, innovation should not be enjoyed by only certain groups. The principle of inclusivity must also be realized through expanding access to education without compromising quality, as well as by strengthening cross disciplinary and cross stakeholder collaboration.
“IPB’s choice is inclusive excellence—access is expanded, but quality standards are maintained,” emphasized Dr Alim.
Launching IPB Prosperity
The second principle is prosperity. One concrete manifestation of this is the IPB Prosperity program, an ecosystem designed to build sources of well-being for the IPB community in a more certain and sustainable manner. A portion of the proceeds from business growth and institutional partnerships will be professionally managed so that the benefits can be returned to the IPB University community.
As a first step, starting this year, IPB University has significantly increased the salaries of contract and non permanent employees. In addition, the Rector has introduced the IPB Bakti Lestari program, which provides an additional Rp10 million per year toward each permanent employee’s retirement savings, calculated starting 10 years before retirement.
“I realize this amount does not yet address all needs. But this is a tangible and consistent start. A tangible start is far more valuable than promises that are never fulfilled,” said Alim.
Living Lab for Sustainability
Meanwhile, sustainability is a prerequisite for every innovation initiative. IPB University is encouraged to take a leading role in climate resilient agriculture, the blue economy, the circular economy, and the One Health approach. “IPB must become a living lab for sustainability,” he said.
IPB University views innovation as a driver of added value, economic activity, job creation, and well being. According to him, IPB University’s success must be reflected in improved well being for farmers, fishermen, fish farmers, and rural communities.
On the occasion of its 63rd anniversary, IPB University also recognized partner farmers and rural communities who have contributed to various activities led by faculty and students. For IPB University, collaboration with the community is a vital component in ensuring that scientific knowledge and innovation truly deliver tangible benefits.
