Does Mixing Eucalyptus Oil with Gasoline Improve Fuel Efficiency? IPB Expert: There Is No Sufficient Scientific Evidence

Recently, claims have been circulating on social media that mixing eucalyptus oil with gasoline can improve a vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

In response, Dr Leopold Oscar Nelwan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at IPB University, cautioned the public against readily believing claims that are not supported by strong scientific evidence.

According to him, there have indeed been a number of studies examining eucalyptus oil as a fuel blend. In certain proportions, the oil has reportedly been shown to improve several engine performance parameters while reducing emissions. However, Dr Leopold emphasized that these studies used oil with specific specifications and scientifically designed blend compositions.

“This differs from the practice widely circulating in the public, adding small amounts of commercial eucalyptus oil to a vehicle’s fuel tank. To date, there is no sufficient scientific evidence that this method can consistently improve the fuel efficiency of standard production vehicles,” he said.

Dr Leopold explained that eucalyptus oil is a mixture of various volatile organic compounds, with 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) as its main component.

“When mixed into gasoline, these compounds can indeed affect the fuel’s properties, such as volatility, octane rating, and combustion characteristics. However, the extent of the changes depends heavily on the composition and amount used,” he explained.

Fuel Blends vs Additives
In addition, he emphasized the importance of distinguishing between fuel blends and fuel additives. Fuel blends are used in proportions ranging from a few percent to tens of percent, which allows them to significantly alter the properties of the fuel.

“In contrast, additives are added in very small concentrations and must have a specific mechanism of action to be effective. To date, there is no scientific evidence proving that commercial eucalyptus oil works through such a mechanism,” he stated.

In addition to its unproven benefits, Dr Leopold also cautioned about potential risks. The composition of commercial eucalyptus oil can vary between manufacturers and has not been designed as a fuel. Its impact on mixture stability, deposit formation, compatibility with fuel systems, and the durability of injectors and engine components during long term use still requires further research.

As scientifically proven ways to save fuel, he recommends that vehicle owners maintain tire pressure according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, perform regular maintenance, use oil and fuel that meet the manufacturer’s specifications, reduce the vehicle’s load, and adopt a smooth driving style without excessive acceleration or braking.
