IPB University Lecturer: Not Only Wood, Cellulose Based Materials Are Also Targets of Termites
Termites are one of the hidden threats that can damage buildings and various items inside homes. Although small in size and often unnoticed, termite infestations can cause serious damage to household furniture, important documents, and even building structures.
A lecturer from the Department of Forest Products, Faculty of Forestry and Environment (FAHUTAN) at IPB University, Dr Arinana, explained that termites do not only attack wood. Various materials containing cellulose can also become food sources for termites, including documents and clothing.
“Documents are made of paper, but clothing is also derived from fibers that contain cellulose,” she said in the IPB Pedia program aired on the IPB TV YouTube channel.
“If we have a collection of clothes stored in a wardrobe that is never opened, termites can come. The key is to ensure air circulation and lighting so that termites feel disturbed,” she explained.
Dr Arinana stated that termite prevention can begin by maintaining a home environment that is not damp and has adequate air circulation. According to him, wardrobes or storage spaces that are rarely opened are among the locations favored by termites.
“Do not forget to open wardrobes regularly. Do not leave documents stored there for a year without checking them. Conditions like that are highly attractive to termites,” she said.
Plastic Containers Are Not a Guarantee
Dr Arinana also corrected the assumption that storing documents in plastic containers is sufficient protection against termites. According to him, although termites do not consume plastic, they can damage it in order to reach the food source inside.
“When termites encounter a barrier, they will damage it, although they do not eat or consume it. Plastic can be damaged so they can reach the contents inside,” she explained.
Therefore, protecting a home cannot rely solely on certain materials or storage containers. Termite control must be carried out comprehensively, both for the building structure and its contents.
According to her, termite control can be implemented from the construction stage through pre-construction methods or after a building is completed through post-construction methods. One commonly applied approach is installing a chemical barrier beneath the building to prevent termites from entering. In addition, a physical barrier in the form of a thicker foundation can be used to hinder termite movement.
Dr Arinana reminded the public to immediately conduct inspections if signs of termite infestation are found, such as wood dust, cracks, or wood that sounds hollow when tapped. According to him, early detection and treatment are far more effective than dealing with severe damage after it has occurred. (Fj)
