As an effort to affirm high school children from farmer families, IPB University provides an opportunity to enter IPB without a test. The opportunity is realized in the “Outstanding Farmer Children” competition branch in the 2024 Indonesian Agricultural Olympiad (OPI).

“IPB University realizes the importance of creating quality farmers who are able to answer various challenges. One of the efforts made by IPB University through the Faculty of Agriculture (Faperta), is by organizing OPI 2024,” said Dean of Faculty of Agriculture IPB University, Prof Suryo Wiyono.

He considered that agriculture is a fundamental sector for Indonesia. Therefore, it needs superior and resilient human resources (HR) to develop it.

The OPI Grand Final was held at the IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Bogor on Saturday (26/10). The farmer’s children, who are 3rd year high school students, participated in various selection stages in high school. They were then challenged to write about the future of Indonesian agriculture and present their ideas.

“The participants of the Outstanding Farmer Children competition branch come from 11 provinces in Indonesia. The four winners get a golden ticket in the form of an opportunity to enter IPB University, especially the Faculty of Agriculture without a test,” explained Prof Suryo.

According to him, “Farmers’ children are used to the agricultural environment in their daily lives, so that if they study at IPB University it will be easier to develop themselves and have the potential to succeed in the world of agriculture.”

Furthermore, Rector of IPB University Prof Arif Satria stated that the children of farmers are expected to return to their home areas to become pioneers in the progress of agriculture in Indonesia.

“What an amazing opportunity, I never had hope to get into college because my parents’ income as farmers is very limited. Entering college is also getting more difficult, the competition is getting fierce and the costs are also high,” explained Putri Aramina As’har, one of the OPI 2024 winning students who won the golden ticket.

“With this competition, we farmers’ children are given the opportunity by IPB University, the best agricultural university to study. So I am proud, grateful, and will study hard,” said the student of SMAN 1 Bangsri, Jepara, Central Java. (*/Rz) (IAAS/NAU)
