Caring for the Environment and Disaster Mitigation, Himagreto IPB University and Cibunian Villagers Make Biopore Holes
The Geophysics and Meteorology Student Association (Himagreto) through the implementation team of the Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa) collaborated with residents of RW 17 Cibunian Village in ‘Training on Making Biopori Infiltration Holes (LRB)’.
The activity was held on Thursday (25/7) and Friday (26/7) which was attended by the head of RW, chief of RT 01, chief of RT 02, and the community from RW 17. The activity began with socialization or delivery of material containing the purpose of biopore infiltration holes, how to make and the tools used to make biopore holes.
Biopore infiltration holes or often called biopore holes are an alternative method to increase water absorption into the soil by utilizing the activities of soil fauna and organisms in the soil.
According to Jeslin Rombe Allo, one of the representatives of Himagreto IPB University, this training aims to help local residents overcome the problem of organic waste volume and reduce the occurrence of natural disasters such as flooding.
The Chief of RW 17, Chief of RT 01 and Chief of RT 02 also assisted the PPK Ormawa implementation team in conducting a location survey which made it easier for the implementation team to determine the location point for making biopore holes.
“The placement of biopores is in several locations that allow inundation and are affordable for residents to dispose of organic waste such as leftover vegetables or fruits,” said Jeslin.
Sequentially, the PPK Ormawa team practiced punching biopores in each resident’s house while informing how biopores work. The willingness of the community in managing waste or organic waste gives a good impression, especially students in realizing the Climate Village.
“The socialization and practice of making biopore infiltration holes is very useful for us because it can be used as a place to process cooking waste and organic waste from our garden,” said one of the residents of RT 02, Cibunian Village.
Through this LRB-making activity, Jeslin and the team hope to create a community that is responsive to hydrometeorological disasters and cares about the environment. Biopore infiltration holes can reduce household waste and function as a product of soil loosening.
“With enthusiasm, motivation and perseverance, we hope that the training on making biopore infiltration holes can maximize the benefits for all parties. Thus, Cibunian Village can become a climate-responsive village that always cares about weather conditions and waste management to minimize environmental pollution and the risk of hydrometeorological disasters,” he concluded.
