The Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) of IPB University bestowed facilitators for the Creative Agro Field Station (SLAK) in the village of Cibanteng, Ciampea District, Bogor.  Through this program, the community is provided with assistance and transfers of knowledge from IPB lecturers. The topic that was presented in this activity was about the application of biofloc technology for catfish farming.

As a part of the extension of this program, a lecturer from the Aquaculture Fisheries Production and Management Technology from the Vocational School, IPB University, namely Dr. Wiyoto SPi, MSc, conveyed that biofloc technology is the addition of organic carbon and nitrogen in fish culture to form bacterial biomass.

“This bacterial biomass is called biofloc.  It is a floc forming microorganism, filamentous bacteria, particles, colloids, organic polymers, cations and dead cells, " he explained.

During this activity, the participants were taught to be independent in the business of catfish cultivation by using biofloc technology well.  By using the biofloc technology, it is expected to reduce feed costs, increase productivity, improve water quality while saving it.

Thirty three participants was consisted of men, women, and youth representatives from Karang Taruna. The participants enthusiastically listened to the presentation that was delivered as catfish cultivation has caught many high business opportunities while it requires simple maintenance.

The Secretary of Cibanteng Village, Sakim, explained that this extension was very fruitful  as it could open up insights and businesses for residents especially the Karang Taruna. "There are many young people in Cibanteng Village who are unemployed, so this is very suitable for the village and there are also rivers or ponds that can be used for catfish cultivation, so that later Cibanteng can make its own catfish cultivation business, but hopefully IPB University can also help us through marketing and training, " said Sakim.

In response, the IPB lecturer will try to facilitate the residents who are willing to learn and practice.  He also invited residents to visit the biofloc pool at the Vocational School of IPB University.

One of the Cibanteng Village officials, Hazmi, hopes that this extension will not only provide theory, but will provide further sustainable practices in the making of biofloc ponds and catfish cultivation.  "I am longing for a biofloc training so that the citizens can practice directly and start a business, I see the catfish cultivation as a good opportunity because there are many demands for it and it is suitable for the Karang Taruna in Cibanteng," he concluded.  (IAAS/KSN)
