LPPM-IPB Inspects Catfish Training Center in Riau

Team of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), held an Observation Study Tour (OST) to Independent Training Center of Marine and Fisheries (P2MKP) at Koto Mesjid Kampar village, Riau, (29-30 / 11). This OST is intended to take a direct look at catfish breeding and post-harvest.
 
"The business group of P2MKP named Mina Graha Mandiri was established in 2002. This type of business includes seedling, enlargement, processing, and post-harvest of catfish. The purpose is to contribute catfish farming to local people so that they become more advanced and prosperous," said Chairman of Mina Mandiri Graha Group, Suhaemi, S.Pi. 
 
He explained that one catfish nursery from from one parent breeder can produce 320 thousand larvae. Within one month,  500-1,000 catfish seeds  can be sold to farmers around Riau and Pekanbaru at a price of Rp 160 per head.
 
Suhaemi invited LPPM team to see catfish enlargement in ponds and catfish processing. Harvested catfish is then processed into smoked fish, and ready for sale around Riau and Pekanbaru at the price of Rp 60 thousand per kilogram.
 
Vice Head of Community Service Division, LPPM-IPB, Dr. Hartayo said, "This activity is to identify the institutional aspects of the business group Mina Graha Mandiri, how initially the group started catfish farming until after harvest. We hope this can be replicated to fish farmers in the villages around IPB campus, with catfish and the mainstay ".
 
Kegiatan OST diakhiri dengan mengunjungi Universitas Riau yang dimaksudkan untuk meningkatkan kerjasama dalam program kegiatan mahasiswa peserta Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) tematik di lapangan. (awl)
