IPB University held the 2026 Legal Education program under the theme “A Comprehensive Review of Handling Reports of Alleged Sexual Violence on Campus”. This activity aimed to strengthen legal understanding and enhance the capacity of campus personnel in handling reports of alleged violence, particularly sexual violence.

Chair of the Legal Bureau of IPB University, Widodo Bayu Ajie, SH, explained that every officer involved in the handling process needs to have an adequate understanding of examination procedures, law enforcement, and the implementation of sanctions to ensure that the process is carried out properly in accordance with applicable regulations.

“Law enforcement personnel need sufficient training and knowledge. They need to understand how to respond and act upon reports, conduct examination processes, and so on, to ensure that cases are handled accurately and appropriately,” Bayu explained during the event held at IPB Dramaga Campus (10/29).

Secretary of the Institute of IPB University, Prof Agus Purwito, emphasized that universities are not only expected to excel academically but must also be able to create a safe and comfortable environment for the entire academic community. Therefore, he stated that efforts to handle violence must be accompanied by prevention measures, stronger coordination, and the proper implementation of procedures.

“What matters is that we must not allow violence to be treated as something normal. We must not make victims feel alone, and we must not protect the institution’s reputation by covering things up,” he stressed.

Prof Agus explained that IPB University has various mechanisms to support the prevention and handling of violence, including task forces, disciplinary commissions, and relevant units at the faculty and school levels. He stated that all these units need to work in coordination to ensure that reports are handled effectively and without unnecessary delays.

Meanwhile, Julia Hernawan, SH, representing the Directorate of Crimes against Women and Children and Combating Human Trafficking, Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) of the Indonesian National Police, explained that the handling of criminal acts of sexual violence must be carried out with an understanding of applicable legal provisions and handling mechanisms.

She emphasized that victims and those accompanying them should not hesitate to seek consultation beforehand if they do not yet understand the reporting procedures or the elements of the alleged criminal offense they have experienced.

Meanwhile, First Expert Auditor of the Investigation Inspectorate, Inspectorate General of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Muhammad Rayvin, emphasized the importance of prevention to ensure that violence does not occur. He also explained that the handling of reports must take into account procedures, victim protection, identity confidentiality, and victim recovery. (dr) (IAAS/KAL)
