Foreign Diver Allegedly Kills Turtle, IPB University Lecturer: Scientific Diving Must Not Disturb Marine Life
The actions of a foreign diver who allegedly killed a sea turtle while underwater have drawn attention from Dr Beginer Subhan, an academic and marine environmental advocate from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), IPB University.
Dr Beginer said that during scientific diving activities, divers are not permitted to disturb animals or marine life, particularly through actions that could harm or kill protected wildlife such as sea turtles.
“The fundamental principle that divers must understand is to respect all living creatures. Divers must not interfere with the activities of animals such as sea turtles, manta rays, or other marine life,” he stressed.
He emphasized that divers are not permitted to touch, chase, lift, ride, or engage in any other activities that could disturb sea turtles or other marine organisms.
According to him, conservation and marine life protection are also integral parts of diving training. Before a dive, participants typically receive a briefing on appropriate and inappropriate conduct toward marine life and the marine environment, commonly known as a conservation briefing.
“A healthy environment and unique marine life are the foundation for diving activities and tourism. Let us protect them together,” said the internationally certified diving instructor, who also currently serves as Dean of FPIK IPB University.
He added that understanding diving ethics is important for both local communities and tourists who wish to engage in underwater activities. Tourism and diving activities should not become threats to the survival of marine wildlife.
Regarding the alleged violation committed by the foreign diver in Indonesian waters, Dr Beginer said that the action should be processed in accordance with applicable Indonesian law.
“If a violation is committed by a foreign diver in Indonesia, it must be processed in accordance with the applicable laws in Indonesia. Penalties may include fines and a ban on entering Indonesia,” he said. (dh) (IAAS/CAA)
