Snakehead fish offer significant benefits for mothers recovering after childbirth. Their high protein content, particularly albumin, plays a key role in accelerating wound healing, whether resulting from a vaginal delivery or a cesarean section.

Prof Ahmad Sulaeman of the Faculty of Medicine and Nutrition (FKGiz) at IPB University explained that snakehead fish is a freshwater fish with protein and nutrient content that is excellent for supporting a mother’s recovery after childbirth. He shared this information during an episode of Perspektif on IPB TV’s YouTube channel.

“Among its proteins is albumin. It’s also a freshwater fish that contains omega-3 fatty acids. All of these are important for new mothers,” he said.

Albumin Accelerates Wound Healing
Prof Ahmad explained that the protein content of snakehead fish ranges from 15–25 percent of its fresh weight. Among these proteins is albumin, which plays a vital role in cell regeneration and the formation of new tissue.

“Albumin is a type of protein that is very important in our bodies. Its role is crucial in the wound healing process,” he said.

According to him, albumin serves as the body’s primary building block for forming new tissue, allowing wounds to close and heal more quickly. In addition to albumin, snakehead fish also contain calcium, phosphorus, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, which further support a mother’s postpartum recovery.

Recommended Consumption Methods
Prof Ahmad recommends consuming snakehead fish by boiling or steaming it to preserve its nutritional content. “The best methods are steaming or boiling. It can be made into soup,” he explained.

He added that for those taking snakehead fish extract, a dose of about 500 milligrams per day is sufficient. Meanwhile, to aid in wound healing after a cesarean section, consuming about 500 grams of fresh snakehead fish per day can be a good option.

With its content of albumin, protein, minerals, and omega-3, snakehead fish can be a nutritious food source to support a mother’s recovery after childbirth. However, consuming snakehead fish should remain part of a balanced, nutritious diet in accordance with individual needs and the recommendations of healthcare professionals. (Fj) (IAAS/LAN)
