Aulia Ulfa, the Daughter of an Ice Cream Vendor in Bondowoso Becomes IPB University’s Top Graduate
Financial constraints did not prevent Aulia Ulfa from achieving academic excellence. Coming from a modest family in Bondowoso, East Java, Aulia successfully completed her studies in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at IPB University and was named one of the top graduates at the commencement ceremony (8/19).
Aulia’s parents support the family by selling ice, instant noodles, coffee, and various snacks at a small stall in Bondowoso. The family’s limited financial circumstances actually served as motivation for Aulia to continue striving for a higher education.
“Among the many blessings Allah has bestowed upon me, being part of IPB is one of the destinies I am most grateful for. For me, the opportunity to be a student is an enticing challenge to forge my character amidst the limitations that have been my constant companions since birth,” said Aulia.
A graduate of SMAN 1 Tenggarang in Bondowoso, she is grateful to have received the Kartu Indonesia Pintar (KIP) College Scholarship, which has greatly helped cover her educational expenses. She also took advantage of the General Competency Education Dormitory (PKU) and the Leadership Dormitory during her first three years of college.
“Living in the dormitory really helped ease my living expenses while I was away from home in Bogor,” she admitted.
Throughout her time as a student, Aulia did not focus solely on academic activities. She actively participated in various research projects, conferences, and internship programs. She was also entrusted with roles as a lab assistant and tutor, and joined the IPB Sustainable Science Research Students Association (IPB SSRS) and the Birena Al-Hurriyyah Student Activity Unit (LKM).
“At IPB University, I learned that being a biologist isn’t just about understanding life, but also about having the courage to question, observe, and seek answers,” she said.
Her thesis research explored the concept of plasticity, an organism’s ability to respond to and adapt to environmental changes. She interpreted this research as part of her own life journey.
“I’ve learned that growth doesn’t always require ideal circumstances. Often, we actually grow the most after we’ve managed to adapt, try again, and give ourselves the chance to develop even when conditions aren’t what we hoped for,” she said.
Behind her achievements, Aulia also expressed her gratitude for the professors, upperclassmen, and friends who supported her throughout her studies.
“Being brought together with professors, upperclassmen, and kind, sincere peers is what I’m most grateful for. They made this journey feel warmer and taught me that no matter how far I go, I never truly walk this path alone,” she said.
For Aulia, her journey from a small street stall in Bondowoso to becoming one of IPB University’s top graduates is proof that limitations are no reason to stop dreaming.
