IPB University, China’s First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), and BRIN Officially Launch the CINODEX Deep Sea Science Expedition in the Sunda Strait
IPB University, together with the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) of China and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), officially launched the Sunda Strait CINODEX Expedition, marking the start of the CINODEX Cruise 2026.
This international scientific collaboration aims to explore deep sea ecology and bioprospecting in the strategic Sunda Strait region.
The launch event (5/14) was held at the IPB University campus and attended by representatives from FIO, Counselor Fu Junsheng of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Indonesia, Third Secretary for Science and Technology Mr Yu Jixuan, and researchers from BRIN, including Ahmad Fathoni, Decky Indrawan, and Dr Luki Subehi.
CINODEX Organizing Chair, Prof Agus Atmadipoera, stated that this expedition is a manifestation of a shared commitment to advancing marine science, strengthening international cooperation, and addressing global challenges through research and innovation.
The Professor at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) at IPB University added that the Sunda Strait was chosen because of its significant strategic and scientific importance. The region is home to the Krakatau Volcano, making it a natural laboratory for marine science, underwater acoustic monitoring, disaster mitigation, and sustainable ocean management.
“The main focus of this expedition is to explore deep sea ecology, starting from the southern part of the Sunda Strait near Krakatau. Researchers will search for hydrothermal vents, which are typically home to deep sea organism communities.
“We will explore not only biodiversity but also, in the future, bioprospecting. This bioprospecting exploration is oriented toward product development, such as industrial enzymes in the future,” he said.
In addition, IPB University Rector Dr Alim Setiawan Slamet, in his remarks, expressed his belief that global challenges require strong partnerships. The CINODEX expedition serves as a vital bridge for scientific diplomacy between Indonesia and China. The Rector also hopes this expedition will provide opportunities for young scientists, students, and technical teams to learn from one another and build long term collaborative networks.
For the Sunda Strait phase, the expedition involves 24 researchers, comprising 8 from FIO and the remainder from IPB University and BRIN, including doctoral and master’s students. This research collaboration is planned to last for 5 years. After the first phase is completed, the expedition will move to central and eastern Indonesia, such as the Flores Sea, Banda Sea, and Sangihe-Talaud, which are also areas of undersea volcanoes rich in deep sea ecosystems.
