IPB University FKGiz Lecturer Shares Tips to Maintain Body Condition During Air Travel
Air travel can trigger various health complaints, especially due to changes in pressure and dry cabin conditions. Passengers often experience ear pain, nausea, and fatigue due to dehydration. Therefore, maintaining body condition before and during the flight is important to stay comfortable.
“The most common complaint is ear pain, especially when we are not feeling fit or have a cold,” said dr Citra Ariani, SpKP, MBiomed, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Nutrition, IPB University.
In the IPB Pedia program on IPB TV, dr Citra explained that this condition occurs due to an imbalance of air pressure between the inside and outside of the ear.
Various Causes
Besides ear pain, passengers also often experience dizziness, nausea, or motion sickness. According to dr Citra, these conditions can be triggered by dehydration as well as psychological factors. “It can be due to dehydration and also psychological pressure, for example, in people who are not used to flying and feel afraid,” she explained.
She added that emergency conditions on airplanes are indeed rare. However, in some cases, such as heart attacks, can still occur, although uncommon. Therefore, maintaining body condition before flying is important.
In line with that, dr Citra recommends adopting a healthy lifestyle before and during the trip. “Getting enough sleep, eating in moderation, and staying physically active really help keep the body fit,” she said.
In addition, passengers are advised not to sit for too long. Do light stretching or walk briefly in the cabin to help blood circulation. “We can do simple exercises so that the legs keep pumping blood back to the heart,” she added.
Another important thing is maintaining body hydration. Consuming enough water during the flight can help prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of dizziness and fatigue.
With good preparation and these simple habits, air travel can remain safe and comfortable. dr Citra reminds every passenger to maintain their body condition to stay fit during daily activities. (*/Rz) (IAAS/AS)
