Overcome Bloated Stomach When Breaking the Fast, dr Mira Dewi Recommends Proper Diet
Fasting provides many health benefits. However, if not accompanied by a proper diet during suhoor and iftar, it can trigger health problems. One of the most common complaints is a bloated or distended stomach after breaking the fast.
dr Mira Dewi, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Nutrition (FKGiz) at IPB University, explains that bloating is generally caused by gas buildup in the digestive tract. However, this condition can also be influenced by various other factors, such as food intolerance, constipation, or digestive disorders.
“The most common cause of bloating is the accumulation of gas in the intestines. However, there are many other factors that also play a role, such as food intolerance or digestive disorders,” she explained.
Furthermore, dr Mira emphasized that fasting itself does not directly cause bloating or a feeling of fullness. These complaints generally arise due to poor eating habits during suhoor and iftar.
“It is important to note that fasting itself does not cause bloating. These complaints usually arise due to improper eating habits, such as immediately consuming foods that contain gas when breaking the fast,” she said.
She added that bloating is also more common in individuals with a history of acid reflux (GERD) or other digestive disorders.
Some habits that often trigger bloating during Ramadan include breaking the fast with large portions after the stomach has been empty all day, consuming high gas foods such as certain nuts, cabbage, and carbonated drinks, eating too quickly without chewing properly, and insufficient fluid intake from breaking the fast until dawn.
To prevent bloating, dr Mira advises people to pay more attention to their eating patterns during fasting. She recommends eating slowly, not rushing, and avoiding foods that cause bloating during suhoor and iftar.
“Try to break your fast gradually and don’t eat large amounts at once. For those with lactose intolerance, it’s best to limit milk consumption,” she said.
Additionally, dr Mira emphasized the importance of meeting the body’s fluid needs with water and maintaining regular physical activity or exercise during Ramadan.
“Proper eating habits, adequate hydration, and regular exercise can help maintain digestive health during fasting,” she concluded. (AS) (IAAS/WSG)
