The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is increasingly noticeable, including in the field of politics. Dr Berry Juliandi, the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at IPB University, predicts that AI will have an impact on the activities of the 2024 General Election (Pemilu), such as serving as a campaign tool.

He illustrates that AI can play a role in analyzing data about election participants. The presence of AI can be utilized to understand demographics, preferences, or trends that can make campaigns more specific for legislative or presidential candidates. Furthermore, AI can even increase voter engagement.

“This makes campaigns more effective. AI can also predict election results in real-time through automated polling, allowing us to create algorithms to determine winners in each region,” he stated in a discussion on the ‘Impact of Artificial Intelligence Usage in the 2024 Election Campaign’ broadcasted live by Kantor Berita Radio (KBR) online on September 20th.

He continues that the role of AI can serve as a social media monitoring tool to identify trending topics among the public. Legislative candidates (Caleg) can directly respond to these trends.

“AI can even personalize campaign messages by targeting individual voters based on their preferences automatically,” he added.

“In general, AI has its advantages and disadvantages. One example of the advantages is that it can provide ease of access to information quickly and in a structured manner, such as the track record of candidates and voters,” said the IPB University lecturer from the Department of Biology, FMIPA.

However, Dr Berry cautions that AI, with its algorithms, can shape voters’ perceptions, causing them to always believe they are on the right side. The use of AI also raises concerns about privacy and data misuse.

“Therefore, there should be a third party to oversee and audit campaigns involving AI,” he concluded. (MW/Rz) (IAAS/Hap)
