International Marine Science Conference at IPB University Supports SDGs

The Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB University held The 3rd International Conference on Marine Science 2019 (ICMS 2019), at IPB International Convention Center (IICC) Bogor, Wednesday (11/4). This activity raised the theme "Toward Sustainable Marine Resource and Environment".

"Marine has an important role in human life. However, his condition is now in serious danger. Therefore, the information generated from researchers is very important to safeguard our marine affairs, "said Dr. Jonson L-Gaol, Chairman of the 2019 ICMS in his remarks.

Meanwhile, the Dean of FPIK, Dr. Luky Adrianto, MSc stated, this activity is part of the FPIK task which is in line with the vision of IPB University.

"Ocean is a strong word placed in the vision of IPB University. That is, IPB University is not only about agriculture but also strengthens agriculture, marine and tropical biosciences. Based on that, the faculty of marine affairs has a strong mandate to develop science in the marine field, "said Dr. Luky.

According to him, the ICMS which has been held for the third time is one of a series of activities to celebrate the 56th Anniversary of IPB University as well as for FPIK.

"So when IPB University was founded, FPIK was present. Therefore, if you look at the IPB University logo, there are five leaves representing five faculties. Namely the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and the Faculty of Forestry, "said Dr. Luky.

According to him, this activity should not only aim to fulfill the number of IPB University's scientific publications, but more than that, this activity must be aimed at strengthening IPB University's position in the Ocean Science Decade.

In addition, Dr. Luky also hopes that later what is obtained from this conference can contribute to the welfare of society, blue economy and other business management to be able to answer the challenges and targets of The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"I hope, of all the many, there will be those whose research is able to answer the target of the SDGs. For example we have ten targets, at this conference we discuss, included in infographics. As part of the contribution in the target SDGs, "said Dr. Luky.

The 3rd ICMS presented the Main Secretary of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Dr. Ir Gellwynn Daniel Hamzah Jusuf, MSc and Prof. Dr. Omar bin Yaakob, Chairman of the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Professor Council and a member of the UTM Senate. (NR)
