Taro, long associated with traditional souvenirs, now takes on a trendier and more modern look. Through the creative efforts of a team of IPB University students under the brand TRILO (Transforming Local Opportunities), this local tuber has been transformed into a modern dessert box tailored to the tastes of Generation Z.

This venture, part of the 2026 Student Entrepreneurship Program (PMW), is led by Avrillia Kasih Karunia Silaban, a student in the Family and Consumer Sciences Program at the Faculty of Human Ecology, IPB University. TRILO’s mission is to diversify local food to make it more relevant to the lifestyles of young people.

TRILO’s key strength lies in the fusion of taro’s distinctive texture with modern elements like cream and various premium toppings. Their signature menu item, the taro dessert box topped with taro powder, has become a favorite for offering a rich flavor experience and a highly Instagrammable visual appeal.

“We maintain the balance of flavors by preserving taro’s character as our core identity, while blending it with modern elements to keep it familiar to young people’s palates,” explained Avrillia Kasih Karunia on behalf of her team.

Through minimalist packaging and storytelling strategies, the TRILO team aims to elevate local food to appear more premium. This strategy has proven effective, garnering positive feedback from students who view the product as a unique new way to enjoy taro.

“PMW has played a crucial role in providing funding and validating our ideas, helping us operate this business in a more structured and sustainable manner,” added Avrillia.

Moving forward, the TRILO team isn’t stopping at the dessert box. They have designed a roadmap for product expansion, ranging from taro cake and mousse to shelf stable products like taro based cookies. This innovation serves as tangible proof of IPB University students’ contribution to supporting local food security through creativity in the culinary industry. (MW) (IAAS/PRO)
