Indonesian history, clustering of established areas, climate, tropical zones and the nature of the Indonesian archipelago must be taken into consideration in preparing the grand design of plantation areas in Indonesia. This was conveyed by Prof. Dr. Agus Pakpahan, MS when attending the Expose Results of the Study of the Grand Design of Plantation Commodity Areas at IPB International Convention Center (IICC) Bogor (21/11). This activity was held thanks to the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia through the Directorate General (Directorate General) of Plantation with the Center for Study, Planning and Regional Development (P4W) Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB).

According to the results of the study, seven plantation principles are needed in the development of plantation areas. Namely physical suitability (agroecosystem) and area status, technical feasibility or technology to be developed in aspects of cultivation and processing, regional economic feasibility, activities to create added value in the region, inclusive value benefits, benefits for surrounding areas, and institutional capacity.

"This study has been going on for eight months through a series of activities including field visits, interviews and discussions with various speakers and related stakeholders. The results of this study will be the basis for the development of a corporation-based plantation area of farmers as mandated in the Minister of Agriculture Regulation (Permentan) No. 18 of 2018 and as a reference in the preparation of master plans at the provincial level and action plans at the district / city level.

"This study covers 11 commodities, namely oil palm, coffee, cocoa, tea, sugar cane, coconut, rubber, pepper, nutmeg, cloves, and cashew nuts," said the Chairman of the drafting team of Grand Design for Plantation Estate Development, Dr. Ir. Ernan Rustiadi, M.Agr.
