Laeli Komalasari, SP, M.Si, Educational Laboratory Pranata from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), succeeded in becoming the second winner in the National Selection of Outstanding Educational Laboratory Pranata event. Her innovation, entitled "Innovation of Hatching Machine to Support the Effectiveness of Academic Performance in the Laboratory", greatly helped researchers in conducting their research.

"Lately the occurrence of power outage in Bogor is more common and difficult to predict. This incident become an obstacle in the implementation of poultry egg hatching activities artificially. "The electrical disturbance has an impact on imperfect embryo development. The eggs fail to hatch and eventually disrupt the research process," she said.

Laeli created a hatching machine to deal with this problem. The hatching machine has a capacity of 100 and 200 eggs. The energy source used comes from PLN electricity by combining a power inverter which is able to convert 12 volt DC voltage to 220 volt AC voltage with battery as the energy reserve.

"Thus, when the electricity goes out, the heat source in the engine is automatically obtained from the inverter device sourced from the battery. The hatching machine is specifically designed so that the egg can be positioned vertically with the air bag above. This condition makes the embryo respiration run optimally. The horizontal egg position causes an uneven spread of heat so that the development of the embryo is not perfect. Therefore, the design of this machine positions the egg vertically," she explained.

According to her, the advantage of this innovation is that it has been tested and implemented. Many undergraduate and master students have graduated and produced scientific publications.

In addition to becoming the Second Winner of the National Outstanding Educational Laboratory Pranata 2018, Laeli had also been awarded as the Second Winner in Scientific Paper Award at the Accredited National Journal (Media Peternakan – Journal of Animal Science and Technology).

Laeli was one of 49 participants from various universities in Indonesia. After passing the first selection process in September, Laeli succeeded to be one of the 10 finalists who were invited to Jakarta for four days for further selecting and determining the first, second and third ranking.

"I feel very fortunate for the support from various parties including from my beloved husband (Melzuardi), the staff of the Poultry Division, especially Dr. Niken Ulupi, Chair of the Department of Animal Husbandry Production and Technology (IPTP) of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of IPB, Dr. Irma Isnafia Arief, colleagues from the IPTP Department, specifically Prof. Dr. Ir. Cece Sumantri and Dr. Ir. Lucia Cyrilla, Dean and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Team of the Directorate for Human Resources of IPB, Coaching Team and Team of Communication Bureau of IPB," she said. (dh/ZSP/Zul)
