Guest Lecture of Department of Economics IPB: “Introduction to R: an Open Source Statistical Program”

The Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Management (FEM) Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) conducted a guest lecture named “Introduction to R: an Open Source Statistical Program” in Common Class Room (CCR), IPB Dramaga Campus, Bogor (10/10). In this opportunity, the guest lecture invited Jack Hetherington, a researcher from University of Adelaide, Australia.

The Head of Department of Economics FEM IPB, Dr. Sahara, S.P, M.Si conveyed that this event aimed to prevent students from using an unlicensed data processing software. If students used R as data processing software, they would not need to buy the licence since it was open-source, so everyone could download it freely.

Besides that, Jack Hetherington said that he had used many data processing software, starting from Stata, Eviews, and many others. Each software had its own advantage and disadvantage.

“One thing that differs R with the others is R is open-source, thus enabling everyone to use the original software without needing to download unlicensed software. I myself have not considered myself as an expert in this application, but I hope that what I share today will be beneficial for your future researches,” he explained.

This guest lecture was attended by students from undergraduate to graduate students and international students that are currently studying in IPB. (CN)
