Character-based learning is one way to improve character and teach good behavior on every learner. The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences held a special training for educators of the National Zakat Board (Baznas) School entitled "Designing Character-Based Holistic Education" at Dramaga Campus of IPB on May 12.

The instructor of this training came from a lecturer from Child Development Division of the Department of Family Consumer Sciences and School Headmaster of Character Education Labschool IPB-ISFA, Rety Puspitasari, M.Si

Alfiasari SP, M.Si, secretary of Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, said the purpose of this training was to make a true contribution of this department in developing education that is more child-friendly and to develop the character of children of the nation.

"This training is devoted to helping the Baznas School in creating learners who have noble behavior. Therefore, the challenge of this training is how to develop a concept of character-based learning,  said Alfiasari.

Alfiasari also explained that for three days, participants were introduced the general concept of education, multiple intelligences, and brain-based learning. On the second day, the participants were presented constructive learning models and how to synergize the 2013 curriculum with character education. On the last day, educators were practicing how to design a a synergistic curriculum with character education.

"Every student is a unique person and must be respected of its uniqueness. Therefore, teachers should recognize the intelligence aspects of their students and facilitate a suitable learning process based on the interests and intelligence aspects of the student. Besides, if the children are happy with learning, then they will activate all the brain cells to learn. So that teachers can combine learning methods right brain and left brain," said Alfiasari as one of the instructor of the training.

Hopefully the participants who are present would be able to use educational curriculum that has been synergized with their respective areas of competence. (FM)
