Urbanization in Indonesia increased tremendously following the country’s rapid development in the 1970s. Since then, Indonesia has been facing high urbanization rate driven by rural-urban migration. The migration of villagers to cities in Indonesia can lead to an uneven distribution, as the migrants  pour into big cities. So the key issues with regard to agriculture and urbanization are whether the growing and changing demands for agricultural products from growing urban populations can be sustained while at the same time underpinning agricultural prosperity and reducing rural and urban poverty.

Research Center and Planning for Regional Development (P4W) of the Institute of Research and Community Empowerment (LPPM) in cooperation with Kyoto University, organized an International Workshop on Rural Development and Transmigration Studies, in  IPB International Convention Center, Bogor, on 2 March 2018.

Dr Andrea Emma Pravitasari, Lecturer of Soil Science and Land Resources, of the  Faculty of Agriculture, of Bogor Agricultural University (FAPERTA IPB), as Chairman of the Organizing Committee stated that the Workshop was the forum to study problems of village development from various research results. The Workshop is expected to recommend new paradigms in village development efforts.

This would be inline with the objectives of P4W itself, namely IPB as national learning institution for the development of science and expertise in the field of assessment, planning and regional development, as well as the forum for the development of partnership network and synergy center for regional experts.

This international collaboration started from the establishment of collaborative research between Kyoto University and IPB since 2015, where Dr Andrea Emma and Dr. Ernan Rustiadi were involved in a project which was headed by Prof. Jane Singer, of Kyoto University. The location area of the study was Jambi, therefore some colleagues of  Jambi University had involved in this research project. This research had been funded by the Government of Japan.

"Later on, the result of such  study would also be presented in Kyoto for other  different audience," she said. Not only with Kyoto University, this international workshop was also co-sponsored by the Ministry of Village, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration.

Dr. Emma expected that the international workshop will recommend the solutions for the development of village areas through various breakthroughs programs. (Wied)
