IPB Organized The Scientific Meeting for World’s Foremost Actuarial Experts

Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia H.E. Peter Mac Arthur attended the International Seminar on Science (ISS) held at IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Bogor, on  19-20 October 2017. The event was organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Bogor Agricultural University (FMIPA IPB), in cooperation with the Directorate of Research and Innovation of IPB; Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) RI; University of Waterloo, Canada; through Risk Management project; Economic Sustainability and Actuarial Science Development in Indonesia (READI); and PT. Diastika Bioteknindo.

In his opening remarks, H.E Mac Arthur expressed his happiness as Canada has provided funding support through READI Project for the implementation of this international seminar. He further expressed his admiration for IPB as this university has been one of the main university partners for READI project, which aims to build a strong foundation for economic growth and stability in Indonesia by strengthening the country's actuarial profession.

Further in his remarks he stated the role of actuaries and underwriters in risk management in public and private sectors is very important. The role of the Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK  Financial Services Authority) and READI is to strengthen the actuary profession in Indonesia's economic stability.

"I was very impressed to learn that IPB is the first university in Indonesia to offer the  degree program for actuarial science under the Mathematics Department, by 2016. I am more than happy to hear that the total number of students enrolled for the second year program has doubled, it shows animo for learning the very nature of risk is high, "he said.

Meanwhile, Vice Rector for Facilities and Business IPB, Dr. Arif Imam Suroso, expected that the event will be the foundation for collaborative education. Collaboration in scientific writing and research, establishing periodical scientific meetings, and scientific journal publications from each participating university.

"The results of this seminar will be published in the scientific  journals of respective universities in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia to show that resources are actually available to initiate for further research and collaboration program on education in ASEAN. Of course, the  journals must be recognized by the scientific community in the world, "he said.

Chairman of the organizing committee of 4th International Seminar on Science, Dr. Yessie Widya Sari, stated that ISS is the academic activity organized by FMIPA IPB. The present seminar is the 4th of its kind to be organized by IPB. This organization is the scientific  forum for researchers, lecturers, students and practitioners who are interested in science.

ISS was first organized in 2013. There were about 188 contributing participants for the international seminar. A total of 146 participants were registered to present their papers and 42 participants for  poster presentation for  4th ISS .

This year the 4th ISS was designed as a momentum for the  7th lustrum of FMIPA IPB. Eleven invited guest speakers, including from Indonesia, Canada, Japan, India, Australia, Thailand and Malaysia were invited to the international seminar.  (Wied)
