Toward the Idul Adha 1438 H Holiday, as many as 600 students and lecturers of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bogor Agricultural University (FKH IPB) planned to have  animal health and inspection program for the animal sacrifice’ meats on Eid al-Adha 1438 H in the community. They will be divided into several small teams to assist the monitoring of animal and meat health at several points in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek). The locations to be supervised will be the place where the slaughtering of  large numbers of sacrificial animals will be performed or those which have dangerous infectious diseases historical background. Duties to be assigned for the groups will include reviewing the condition of each animal that will be slaughtered, their  physical characteristics, behaviour, to ensure the healthy animal sacrifices the condition of meat to be distributed for the communities.

The involvement of FKH IPB Groups who are consisted of students and lecturers in assisting the Livestock Services or other related Offices to have  animal health and inspection program for the animal sacrifice’ meats has been established approximately for 15 years. "In the early days we sent students, the closed communities were unable to accept public given advice related to the healthy animal sacrifices the condition of meat. However, at pressent the arrival of students are welcomed and any advises given related to animal health sacrifices always get the full attention of the community, "said Dean FKH IPB, Prof. Dr. Drh. Srihadi Agung Priyono.

He said, toward  the celebration of  Idul Adha this year he received plenty of  letters addressed to FKH IPB from various regions to ask FKH students to be despatched to their locations to monitor the animals in their area. However, the demand is not entirely fulfilled, due to the limited amount of labor.

To respond to the limited human resources, FKH IPB provided training course to educate board executives of Moslem Prosperity Council (DKM) located in Bogor area. Guidance related to animal welfare, animal and meat health, as well as technical during animal slaughtering that is usually done in mosques built by DKM. The training courses have been conducted to increase the independence and ability of the community in preparing optimal service when the day of slaughtering the sacrificial animal arrives.

Debriefing on their assignments in the field was provided before the groups who are consisted of D3 and the Undergraduate Program (S1) students, and Co-Assistant of Veterinary School are despatching to their respective assignment areas. In addition to conducting animal and meat health checks, the group will also collect actual information in the field related to the implementation of slaughter of sacrificial animals as an evaluation  material for the Animal Husbandry Department in each region. "In addition to the need and help the community, the direct monitoring by IPB FKH students is also a separate learning for students who works in the field," said Prof. Srihadi. (Wied)
