Rector of Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB Bogor Agricultural University), Prof. Dr. Herry Suhardiyanto, took Cycling around Campus IPB Dramaga accompanied by the Executive Boards of the University on Monday, 14 march 2016. On this special occasion Rector invited the Executive Board Members of the University level, Faculties, and Working Units of IPB to cycling along the campus (gowes) to monitor progress in promoting the use of green transportations.

The current gowes group were consisted of Rector, Deans, Vice Deans, Chairmen of Departments, Directors, Head of Bureaus and Offices.  The route of current gowes was as follows: started the Rectorate Building – Grha Widya Wisuda (GWW) – Common Class Room (CCR) – SMA Kornita – Alhurriyyah Mosque – Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) – Faculty of Animal Husbandry (FAPET) – Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) – and ended at Rectorate Builidng again,

Along the way, Rector observed the motor parking area as one the centrally parking Unit.  In addition to observe the motor parking area, Rector also took time to greet the security guards of the  Campus Security Unit (Unit Keamanan Kampus UKK) on duty to enquiry  their readiness to apply the  motor vehicle regulations in the parking areas.

In addition to facilitating the security issues, Rector expected that the centralized parking arrangements may also encourage the use of bicycles on campus," as IPB will promote biking as a safe and healthy alternative means of transportation on campus. It’s all a matter of personal choice, no one is forcing others to ride a bike, as IPB will also provide other alternatives transports such as electric cars and buses, "said Rector.

Further Rector explained that total emissions of pollutants generated by motorcycles tends to be higher than the total emissions of the car. In addition, he understands that bikers are also capable to cycling anyway. As Cycling is a healthy, invigorating and environmentally friendly way to get to campus, therefore, biking will be promoted as alternative means of transportation in the campus.

Rector understood that promoting the utilization of the  environmentally friendly transport system needs necessary adjustments and improvements, one of which is the  limited number of guards. "For the shortage of cycling guards then IPB will provide opportunities pengojek (motorcycle taxi) to take those vacant posts," said Rector. Up to present, nearly 65 (sixty five) pengojek had expressed their willingness to take that post as cycling guards. (Wied)
