This is the second time for the ship UMITAKA-MARU to visit Jakarta. On the first visit in 2003, the mission of the ship was a deep-sea research collaboration. At that time some IPB’s scientists participated in the cruise on the Indian Ocean, south of the island of Java.
For this visit, the mission is to promote cooperation, research, and academic exchange between TUMSAT with some universities having the Faculty of Fisheries, such as IPB, Diponegoro University, UNHAS, UNSRAT, UNMUL, Unpatti, STP Jakarta and Sailing Academy. Also present for this event were Deans of Kasertsat University, Chulalongkorn, Thailand, Vietnam Maritime University, Can Tho University, as well as some Japanese maritime companies in Indonesia.
A seminar has been carried out successfully in the Seminar Room accomodating 60 people on board. This onboard seminar aims to achieve more massive cooperation in research and academic field with the universities in partnership with TUMSAT. So said President of TUMSAT, Dr.Nobuaki Okamoto and Vice President Dr.Tomoji Takamasa.
IPB should take more concrete action in the international cooperation in the academic field and tesearch with TUMSAT as the cooperation so far initiated has not been optimal.
In the future, an MoU of cooperation will be made between universities in Southeast Asia for the field of fisheries and marine. An introduction to the Faculty of Fishery and Marine Science was presented by Dr.Budy Wiryawan (Head of PSP Department) representing Dean of the Faculty . According to him, the on-board seminar on marine and fisheries should be promoted in Indonesia to improve the sense of ownership and love for the world of maritime and fisheries. This is in line with the ideals of the new Government of the Republic of Indonesia. (Mtd)
